Chapter 1
WHICH BUSINESS TO START
Who is an entrepreneur? An entrepreneur is a person who starts a business with the aim of making money. An entrepreneur studies his environment, gathers the required resources and starts the business. Knowing which business to start is the core of entrepreneurship. Many people go into a particular kind of business for all the wrong reasons and seem to ignore the most important principles and values of business.
Let us begin by defining business in the simple way we have been told and made to believe. A business is an act of making, buying, selling or supplying of goods or services. Whether you are manufacturing a product or buying a product for re-sale, as long as you intend to profit from it through trade, you can as well call it a business. It does not matter if the product is tangible or intangible. Back to our topic. Which business to start.
Of all the many businesses today, only one in every ten businesses is successful and this is surprisingly for all the obvious reasons you are about to find out. If you are already into a business and are struggling, you will surely find out why and understand that maybe you have wasted a lot of your time and resources on implementing complicated work-flows based on statistics and charts that never mattered in the first place.
Knowing which business to start begins with answering a few personal questions. No one can answer these questions for you and you have to be absolutely honest with yourself. Do not answer these questions yet. Just read through them and allow your mind process them as you read through to the end of this chapter.
• What is it that you love doing or are happy doing?
• How many complements have you got for doing what makes you happy?
• What negative things have you heard or been told about what you love doing?
• If you have for a long time ignored your passions, how many events have you experienced and considered coincidences which seem to remind you of your passions?
• If you stopped suppressing your passions and instead put it to use, how would you contribute to the betterment of people around you?
• Would you do what you love for free?
Every single person in this planet is unique in a special way. Everyone is passionate about something, good or bad. It is our individual task to find out what it is we are so passionate about. It is only you who knows the answers to these questions. Some people shy away from the things they love because of fear, fear of judgment from other people, some others have been made to believe that the things they are passionate about are too small
and it is time to grow up!
I know of a man who has made millions of dollars selling candy and another who earns more than $50000 annually for smiling at the entrance of a fancy hotel.
Whatever reason you may have for not believing that your happiness matters is the greatest limitation of your life and the major cause of your failure in business. The things that make you happy are part of your being just like your hands, legs and any other body part. Cutting off any of your body parts creates a limitation and the same applies to blocking the things that we do that make us happy
