    …From the Beginning II Now…

    From the Beginning to Now

I never knew how I was going to turn out. I guess no one does. I knew that I was ugly at the moment, but I always wondered was I ever going to be pretty. This was the only thing I ever thought about in the early part of my life.

Throughout elementary school, my cousins and sister were the only people who would play with me. I believed that my aunts and mom made them do so.

My sister started to like me after I got older because she said that I wasn’t so cute anymore. There is this one story that her and my mom always told me when I was younger. The story is about the day I was born.

Ooh, look at that pretty Chinese baby over there. Ooh, she is so pretty. Her eyes are very brown and her hair is really straight, the nurse approaches the window. Hi, with smiles and nice hellos, we would like to see the Leighs’ baby. They watched the nurse walk down the aisles; she also looked on the side panels of the babies’ cribs as she passed them. She stopped right over the Chinese baby. My mom and sister tapped on the window and the nurse didn’t turn around, so they knocked a little harder and said, No we want to see the Leighs’ baby, and the nurse moved her lips and said, This is the Leighs’ baby. My mom and sister didn’t like her. All the way home, my mom said, This must be the wrong baby. Months passed and my sister wouldn’t hold me nor change my diapers. In the last three months of the first year of my birth, my sister said that I was getting ugly and now she can take me out in public and all the attention would be on her again. My sister was wrong; she enjoyed me. She took me with her so much that I started to call her Mom and everybody we met asked was I her daughter. I had begun to look like my sister. My sister started to cry because she didn’t think she was ugly too.

My appearances didn’t get better; they seemed to have gotten worse. As time passed, my sister got prettier and I stayed the same. I never mentioned my sister’s name to anyone because they might know her, but I’ll tell you. Shannon Ann Leigh, do you know her? Good. Let me describe her to you. She was the prettiest person I knew and she still is. Her eyes are the right size (almond shape). They are this soft brown color (snuff brown, to be exact). Her skin is slightly tanned (medium rare). Her teeth are set perfect in her mouth. She has hair texture of a kitten, it’s smooth and manageable with a lot of body. Her fingers are just the right lengths, so if she would like to pick up two lead crystal goblets, they wouldn’t break, the goblets would have just enough space between them that they wouldn’t even tap each other. Can you believe that? I can’t even continue; she’s married now, so there will be no description of her body.

While growing up, I always remembered my mom working. I didn’t see too much of her, but, when I did, we had a lot of fun and quality time together. I’m talking about THE TRIO. The leader of the group was Jonna Mae Leigh’s mother, Shannon Ann Leigh, and recent member Debora Jean Leigh. We did everything together. We fussed, laughed, cried, ate, slept and drank together all in the same house. We were the closest trio I ever knew. Mom did her part excellent. She went to work, made the money, bought the food, made the decisions and gave the whippings. My sister did her part well. She cooked, cleaned, combed hair, did homework, washed clothes and gave the whippings, too. I did my part even better. I ate the food that my mom brought home for my sister to cook, I spent the money that my mother would work for, I followed along with the decisions my mother made, I dirtied the clothes that my sister washed, and I received the whippings that both my mother and sister gave.

Those were the good old days of whipping giving and whipping taking. I got so good at getting whippings that I used to come home from school taking off my clothes and either my sister or my mother would come up and whip me. Those days are over, but I was still ugly. My sister started college, my mother remarried and I was still young. I missed my sister and my mother. My sister was going to school and school activities every time I looked around.
