    I want to thank you and congratulate you for reading my book, "South Beach Diet: Lose Weight and get Healthy the South Beach Way".

    This book contains proven steps and strategies to help you get started with the South Beach Diet. This is just one of the many diets you will find; no doubt you have already tried some of them, with little to no success. Most people start these diets and fail because they are not properly prepared – mentally and physically. Failure leads to all the weight you lost going back on plus a little extra and this is incredibly discouraging.

    However, the fact that you are reading my book means you haven’t given up and are ready to give it another go. The South Beach diet is a little more flexible than some of the others and that means you have a much higher chance of success with it.

    Research tells us that the South Beach Diet is neither low carb nor low fat so what is it? That is something you will learn in my book, along with the three different phases of the diet, a few recipes to help you get going and exercises to help you on your way to a new healthier, fitter and slimmer you. Best of all, you will learn just how flexible and how easy the South Beach diet is to follow.

    Chapter 1: South Beach Diet – What’s it all About?

    So, if the South Beach diet isn’t a low fat or a low carb diet, what is it? This diet is all about eating the right kinds of fat and carbohydrate, the ones that help you to eat more and enjoy your food without having to fill up on bad carbs and bad fats. A direct result of this is weight loss and better health. If you follow phase 1 properly, you can expect to lose anywhere between 8 and 13 lbs. in the first two weeks – that has to be the best motivator ever, yes?

    The South Beach Diet has been around for ages and it has been successful in helping many overweight people get down to their ideal weight as well as keeping the excess weight off permanently. The South Beach diet consists of three distinct phases:

    Phase One

    The very start of the diet, this is the strictest part and the bit that will challenge you the most. Through phase one, you must eat three full balanced meals every day plus two snacks – dessert is optional! Those meals must consist of lots of vegetables, fruits, cheese, eggs and nuts with smaller amounts of chicken, fish, meat and shellfish. Salads are an integral part of the diet, especially when seasoned with organic olive oil and you must drink a lot of water – tea and coffee are not prohibited as they are in some diets, though.

    For two weeks, you are not allowed to eat any potatoes rice, pasta or bread. You can’t eat a single piece of fruit and you definitely can’t eat cakes, pastries, cookies, candies, ice cream or anything else like that. After two weeks, these foods will be added gradually back into your diet but you still have to go easy on the sweet stuff – if you can, avoid it altogether.

    What about sweet cravings? Or cravings for any food that you have become used to eating? The first couple of days are going to be the hardest and you must resist the temptation. After that, you will find that the cravings begin to disappear quite quickly
