The Roller Coaster - Wendy Elmer
Chapter 1
June 1st, 2010 promised to be a scorcher of a day in Las Vegas. Matthew Davis just graduated from the University of Nevada Las Vegas with a bachelor’s degree in education. His mother was over the moon with pride because earlier in his life he was labeled as learning disabled. He was told he would never succeed in school or life. He fooled them all. He nearly busted the door down when he found out he made the dean’s list in college. His first order of the day was to find a job. His plan was to start at the beginning of the strip and end at the other end. Tomorrow he was going to do the other side of the street. His mother wished him good luck with his plan. His first stop was the New York, New York hotel. He followed the signs to the Human Resources Office. Everybody was very helpful with his requests.
When he got there he spoke to the secretary. The man standing behind him was the director of Personnel. He called him into his office and they talked. He gave him the choices of maintenance, boiler room, or engineer on the roller coaster. His job was to start it up and stop it. He was shown a billboard with a lot of blinking lights. Running it was a no brainer. He pushed the green button and wait for the numbers next to it to count to five. Then he was to push the red button. The roller coaster automatically slowed down and came to a slow stop safely. As the roller coaster moved the lights kept blinking on the billboard. This told Matthew where the roller coaster was without putting himself in danger.
Chapter 2
Reynolds Jones made a phone call to Liam Sharkey and told him to meet him at this house at 6:00 that evening. Reynolds had a plan to commit a crime. He wanted Liam’s help in pulling it off. He arrived precisely at 6:00 as requested. Liam asked for a beer, but Reynolds said not yet because he wanted a clear head while planning this caper.
Liam said: So Reynolds. What can I do for you?
Reynolds said: I want to derail the roller coaster and cause injuries.
Liam said: Are you mad? That could cause fatalities. I already have a police record. My crimes have never involved fatalities. These are visitors from all over the United States and other countries.
Reynolds said: Have you ever noticed how kids scream and lose composure? The parents turn around and scream at the kids in public I want to give kids and parents something to scream about.
Liam said: "You’re on your own kid. I will not associate with crimes involving fatalities. I am sticking with armed robbery. Last time I held up a gas station it involved a pair of sissors, not even a gun.
Reynolds said: You will meet me at midnight Saturday and do as you are told. No is not an option Meet me at the roller coaster. No excuses for letting me down.
Chapter 3
Matthew was scheduled to start work Friday at 8:00 in the morning. He showed up fifteen minutes early for job training and to go over new employee paper work. His hours were set up around his diabetes eating schedule. The director of personnel was also diabetic, so they agreed to talk about it whenever the need came up. He was promised a partner to work with. They never left one person on the board because two sets of eyes are better than one. He kept in touch with another person by walkie talkie. His job was to make sure all the seat belts were fastened properly and everybody was seated. One word from him and Matthew pushed the green button to start the ride. Matthews first day of work went off without a hitch Matthew’s relief worker showed up just in time. The roller coaster ran until 8:00 p.m. Matthew was a happy camper at the end of the day and he couldn’t wait to get home to tell his mother all about his first day of work.
Chapter 4
Liam and Reynolds made a date for Saturday morning. Reynolds brought along a camera and took many pictures.. He took pictures of the roller coaster, the stairwell, the cars, everything
