A Classroom Philosophy

Background

Yes, music did touch my early years. Mother played the piano and studied voice. I took clarinet in elementary school and sang a little in junior high. I did take piano lessons from fourth grade until my dad tired of forcing me to practice. As the hormones flooded my overweight frame, I determined to be a man. Therefore, I left music behind and it disappeared from my life during my sophomore year in high school. When I was a senior at Central Washington University (1959) , I had to take a general music appreciation course, fortunately, for only a quarter. As graduation approached, I looked for a coaching job with a high school teaching position. I finally realized that I had to enter into a district through an elementary teaching job. Now I found myself in strange situations: playing piano for a choir in both elementary school and at my next job, junior high. After three years of teaching history at the junior high level, I went to the University of Washington on a sabbatical leave and studied Russian language, history, and literature. When I returned to teaching I moved to a high school as language and history teacher and as an assistant football coach.

As I began my first year in the new position, there was an odd turn of events. The high school was suddenly without a choral teacher. The principal knew that I had played the piano a bit at lower levels, so he asked me to baby sit the class! I loved it! This was 1967 and I was thirty years old. I was teaching music and choral classes but without any training. I was hungry to find answers so I
