Thank you Elizabeth Evans for helping me with this book. I can always depend on your support and help. I’ll always be grateful for that.

I have worked with Victoria Miller for several years now. Without her I wouldn’t have gotten as far as I have in this writing endeavor. As usual she has done brilliant work on the cover art and there is no one else I trust to make me look good. Thanks for everything. You truly are the best.

In life we are faced with many choices. This book is about choices and what ones are right for us as individuals. Sometimes you don’t know what the right one is until you are faced with extraordinary circumstances. In a superficial way this seems like lust at first sight, but deep down it’s more than that—its realizing that some things are worth fighting for even when your demons drag you to the darkness. Having trust and faith are sometimes the hardest things to hold on to. So keep moving forward and accept the gifts that are given to you—even when all you want to do is crawl in a hole and die.

    Prologue

Weddings. They were supposed to be happy. A time to celebrate the love between two people and the future they had planned. In some ways, Logan Crane did experience a little joy. He did hope that his two friends had a long wonderful life together.

    But he couldn’t feel it.

He hadn’t told anyone about the war raging inside of him. Every day was a constant struggle. To wake up, to eat, to make an effort to be more than the terror raging through his soul—he wasn’t the same man they knew. He didn’t think he’d ever be that man again. Some days he wanted to curl up in a ball and cry, and others he just needed to feel alive. Nothing worked.

Today he had to work even harder to fake it. Carly and Phil were getting married. He couldn’t worry his best friends. They shouldn’t have to concern themselves with anything other than their special days. For them he’d keep it under wraps. He was strong enough to make it through one day. Then he could hide in his new apartment and then… Logan closed his eyes and took a deep breath. He would not think about tomorrow. All he could do was take one day at a time and pray he found a way to survive. No one understood what he’d been through, and the sting of betrayal that had settled inside him.

He’d find a way to get a little bit stronger each day. It wouldn’t be easy. But nothing ever worth doing was, and damn it, he would not curl up in a ball and let the world crush him. Somehow he’d make it through the wedding, and the reception. He could do it—and maybe if he kept telling himself that, it would all work out.

First thing on his list was to visit Carly in the bridal chamber. The wedding itself would start soon and he wanted to see his closest friend before she said her vows. He strolled down the short hallway until he reached the room, then knocked. Logan stepped inside and pasted a smile on his face. Carly shouldn’t notice anything strange about him—he hoped. Look at you all dolled up. I never thought I’d see the day you would willingly tie yourself to a man.

Carly came across the room and wrapped her arms around him. Shut up, she told him. You’re the one person who’s always known how I felt about that man. You shouldn’t be surprised.

He wasn’t. Logan had always known how she felt about Phil. If he hadn’t been married to… He shook that thought away. That evil bitch couldn’t hurt anyone ever again, and maybe one day he’d be able to forget what she’d done to him. I’m not, he said. Can’t I mess with my best girl?

I suppose so, she agreed as she hugged him tighter.

Logan let her go and took a step back. He glanced at her and then slid his attention to Harper. You both look lovely. He had to make himself glance away from her. Carly’s sister was perhaps the loveliest woman he’d ever seen. He tried his best not to stare at Harper and keep his attention focused on Carly. Are you ready to do this? The natives are getting restless out there.

Logan shoved his hands into his pockets to hide the shaking. After being held hostage for over a year, he had been having trouble acclimating to society again. People in general made him nervous and crowds were even worse. Which was why he had so much trouble with the idea of this wedding, but for Carly he’d been willing to try. It would take a lot for him to start to be at ease around others. He knew how important it was to her for him to attend. Phil had asked Logan to be his best man—probably for Carly. He wouldn’t let his issues destroy any part of her wedding day. Unless you’ve changed your mind, he joked. Say the word and I’ll clear the church in a heartbeat.

Carly answered him with a huge grin. He loved seeing her so cheerful. A part of him doubted he’d ever be that happy. His life was doomed to be one never ending battle. Oh, he certainly hoped things would improve, but deep down he had doubts.

We’re ready, Carly said. Tell them to get this show on the road.

He nodded and left the room. Harper and Carly had both been radiant. He loved the color of Harper’s dress. It was a lovely shade of peach that made her skin glow. Carly had her own glow to her, but he suspected that was more to do with her excitement. Logan wished he could feel even an ounce of that joy.

He nodded at Phil and headed to join him at the altar. The ladies are ready.

Phil rubbed his hands together anxiously, then blew out a breath. "I don’t think I’ve ever been
