INTRODUCTION Purpose: Since there are thousands of medical abbreviations and acronyms, the purpose of this chart is to present those most commonly used. CARE must be exercised when using this shorthand communication format, because of multiple meanings for a particular abbreviation or acronym. The correct definition is determined by the context of the material. Definitions: Abbreviation: A shortened form of a word or phrase.
