I would like to dedicate this book to my husband. He has inspired me in so many ways, he has always believed in me and encouraged me to write. He gave me true strength to continue and succeed my goals, thank you Darrell. I would like to thank my family and friends for your support without you I have nothing. I tribute this to anyone who has had a hard life. Lydia is a character given to each person who felt there was no way out. There is always good to come, it’s the wait with grace. God, thank you.
Introduction
What life brings you is unexpected sometimes I guess one could say. My name is Lydia Adams and I was born into hell right outside of the flames. My parents were the devils and I was the infant who screwed their deal to rule the throne in the streets. They both were young and I would call it not ripened yet. I suppose they never gave much thought to me either way it was. I am from Heavens Way which is a small town outside of Georgia. It is a peaceful town if there wasn’t junk on every corner of every street, it would be even better if the cops didn’t feel the need to fatten their wallets. They often had closed their eyes to the damaged society as is if Heavens Way was merely just as it sounded. It was the 70’s when I was born, the era of that time were everything was groovy and nothing made sense, by that time anything one thought was pure just wasn’t anymore, including my parents and their delightful lifestyle. Mama was a teen junkie with a mental disorder, talk about increasing one’s high. I can’t say for certain what good the drugs done for her, but between the junk and your elevator not going all up is a deadly cocktail and it was one she was pleased to embellish. Daddy was the drunken dealer that landed mama this gig in life when she was 14 years old just barely legal. I suppose he was a charming man in the moment, I swear he could have dope hanging from his lips and he would convince anyone it just wasn’t his. Boy he was a good liar or maybe everyone in his company was just stupid. Mama couldn’t see daddy’s ways, she was far too busy mixing that selfish cocktail she enjoyed so much. But once she didn’t cut it for ole dad anymore, he was coming to the next best thing to her, me. Mama had lived there in the little town since the day she popped out in this world. Her given name was Cynthia Lucille, from those faded pictures in that old shoebox she was adorable, guess everybody has their moments. When she was 4, she developed these uncontrollable fits. A doctor declared she was mentally unable to be a normal standard. By the time she was 12 she was slicing herself like she was a hot ham, if something pissed her off, she’d cut. Simple solution to a not so simple problem.
My daddy come along with the right medicine for her and now she’d be lucky to make it the kitchen to even find a blade. My daddy, Buford Lee Adams hasn’t always lived here, he many times told mama just how much better he was because he came from the big city. Don’t know much bout him really, I think I was too afraid to ask him exactly what had happened in his life that had turned him so far away from normality. I found a lot of photo in that same shoebox of him and his old man. His father in the picture looked to be intimidating, it was as if he was going to choke daddy. He had evil hands and mean in his eyes too. You could tell by the fear in daddy’s face he walked the line. I wish I could fully understand the giving to me such a chaotic life, but I can’t. My friend Lindy that I went to school with once told me to watch a program on TV since I couldn’t go to church. So one Sunday I turned on the tube to find this fine gentleman stood behind a some privileged polished desk with his fancy neck tie and spoke with fierce God is not the enemy my friends, thou he will not put no more on the mind, body, and soul, that you my friend you cannot bare.
I had thought about that statement for what it seemed like a lifetime. I came to a point where this thought sound believable, until my concentration was broke with that drunken breath Lydia, it’s time to come be daddy’s girl, mama’s on a spell again
. Then at that moment I knew God had put a little too much for a little girl like me, but as I’m led to that bed I knew then, that sweet talking man with a neck tie was a liar too. And I could except there was a God if while I lay in this bed, he would take me to that place where I forget all these sin filled things. Or who this predator really was or just maybe mama will hear my cries this time. I bare my soul and claim this to be My Story.
Chapter One- Apple Pies and Bad News
God, the days in July could be hot I tell you, I always felt so dirty as if you could wash your skin raw and still never be clean. I laid on the front porch most of life mainly because I was bored to death. Heavens Way wasn’t the most exciting town any stranger could come to. Mainly drunks and thanks to daddy the junkies looking for a buck or giving one for the dope. I sat up due to being so sticky from the sweat, only to see mama coming from across the yard. I paused as she came stumbling up, I wonder how a woman could be so unaware of their actions. Lydia you do them damn dishes?
Yes, mother
I replied. Well I just want you to know to get somewhere tonight daddy’s bringing some friends by
. I sighed in displeasure I hated their company. As she scattered by me I noticed how awful her arms were getting these days. I didn’t care and I was 15 and that shit was not my problem, keeping her damn husband off me was though. After the dear friends pay their visit mama will be junked and I might as well say I shouldn’t come home at all. I better get to Frannie’s house she was safe. I thought she would be the perfect mother, but no babies. Odd the best people in life never put their charity to work. She made rolled out biscuits at least twice a week, I never knew who the heck she was making for. Her boyfriend Jake was in the army, so I know they weren’t for him. She was warm at heart she took care of both parents until they died and they left her a little farm along the way from our dump. I first met Frannie Grissom one day while I was getting some fruit at the downtown stand. She smiled at me, I couldn’t imagine who she was referring to. I mean why would a cotton dressed 30 year old with flip priss hair smile at white trash like me? She offered me an apple said I looked hungry and to
