Foreword
My adventure and love of poetry began when I was a small child in school, where I studied the many types and styles of poetry. I learned to recite poetry about romance, nature, history, etc.
I started writing in the 1980’s while I was teaching high school political science, history, the U.S. Constitution and the constitution of two states. My first book, Spirits
, is formed around four of my poems: I Want To Live
, Silent Cry
, One Boy – One Girl
, and Spirits
, which focuses on the issue of abortion.
When my grandson, Andy, shipped out to Iraq during Operation Iraq Freedom, I wrote my first Patriotic Poem. Another grandson, Alex, followed later to Iraq and is now serving in Afghanistan in Operation Enduring Freedom. I have written many Patriotic Poems since and they have become a part of this book.
Many of my romantic poems were inspired by my deep love for my husband, Roy, of 45 years. Others were inspired by things I have read about, observed, and world events.

I want to thank some very special people whose encouragement has helped to make this book possible. First of all, to my mother, Opal Shoemaker McCracken, who passed her gift of writing and her love of poetry down to me. Thanks also to my sisters, Lasca Yerington and Lueene McCracken for their encouragement. I would also like to thank my granddaughter, Mariah Peters, who was the inspiration and co-author of, I Spy With My Little Eyes
, a poem in this book among others she inspired. I want to also thank Julian Shapiro, my great nephew, who typed and organized my poems for publication.
Patriotic
Americans Wept Today, Americans Prayed Today
Americans wept today and Americans prayed today.
Americans wept because terrorists attacked us.
Not out of darkness did they come, but in the light of day.
Neither shells, nor bombs, nor missiles did they use.
Instead, they used our own planes against us
In an attempt to confuse. They flew our planes
Into the Twin Towers of the World Trade Center
And into the Pentagon. They wanted to show us
That ours wasn’t their way. First came the shock
And disbelief, then came the tears and prayers,
Tears and prayers for the people in the Word Trade Center
And the Pentagon, for the brave fire fighters, police,
And their families, tears and prayers for the passengers
And crew members on our planes, tears and prayers
For the heroes
