    Introduction

    Now, as an old man, I regularly find myself looking back over my life experience. My thoughts of a time that happened more than a half century ago, my tour in Vietnam, seem to return with greater frequency. It may be the lingering wounds and health issues of today that keep stirring the pot of remembrance of the seven and a half months of life-altering service in the steamy jungles, groves, and muddy country sides of the distant battlefield. Or it could be that my understanding of that time is coming more clearly into focus now with the wisdom of age and maturity. Or is it that I am being better informed by observing the world around me? You know, there is nothing new under the sun!

    Today, my vision of politics and the affairs of the world hold a greater interest for me as I understand their significance and relevance to the state of our Union. Things I once held dear and were priorities have diminished in importance and have faded into the background of time and reality. New things have
