Tupamonku Makes His First Appearance
H ello there!
My name is Tupamonku.
It is pronounced ‘Too-Pa-Mon-coo’.
Everyone has problems with my name at first.
I am a Koala Bear that was born in the eucalyptus forest of Southern
Queensland.
Generally I would like to think of myself as an explorer.
There I go again getting too far ahead of the story.
I tend to do that from time to time.
So…..since every story has a beginning, I feel like that is a fitting place
to start.
It was thirty days into October when a special koala was born among the forest trees. Relying on his sense of smell, strong forelimbs and claws, he crawled into his Mother’s pouch completely unaided. A baby koala is called a Joey
and is blind, hairless, and no bigger than a nickel. After a four and a half month period of time a new Mother felt like something was not quite right….her young koala seemed to be growing much too fast.
Since koala bears live in societies, an elder council was always available to answer questions. So the Mother Koala went to seek some advice from the elder koala named Rudall.
Hello young Tungsten. How is your little one?
Rudall asked.
Well, I am not really sure how to answer that,
Tungsten said with some hesitation.
What do you mean?
Rudall asked curiously.
Ore and I noticed that our young one has grown very fast and that he is hardly able to stay in my pouch,
Tungsten said.
Then Rudall asked, Is he balled up in your pouch? I can’t even see him at all.
Believe me, Tupamonku is in there but he is too shy to come out to meet you,
Tungsten said.
I see. We may have a bit of a quandary here,
Rudall said.
"Let me see if I can get him to come out and join our conversation and then I can take a look at him to see
