101 Ways to Avoid Hair Loss: For Persons with Relaxed, Natural, and Afro-Caribbean Hair
()
About this ebook
In 101 WAYS TO AVOID HAIR LOSS, you will recognise the many ways in which hair loss can occur. There are so many processes which engender the loss of relaxed, permed and natural Afro-Caribbean hair, that excessive hair loss and damage is virtually ignored, or is accepted as normal.
Afro-Caribbean hair enjoys a sensational mix of various textures which stem from multi-racial mixes. This hair therefore, should be beautiful, alluring and provocative to all hair stylists. Sadly, those textures are looked upon as coarse, strange and difficult to manage. When hair loss occurs, the blame is too frequently placed on the hair quality, something which is almost totally acceptable to many persons.
Hair loss frustrates, and hair maintenance sometimes becomes a little too demanding. This then results in the acceptance of poor hair care. If only steps would be taken to avoid hair loss, what beauty, amazement and interest would be generated in Afro-Caribbean hair. This book will allow persons to have an informed view of various everyday situations which can cause hair loss. For the author believes that as one becomes aware, swift action will definitely be taken , resulting in the eventual love for Afro-Caribbean hair.

Introduction
Relaxed and Natural Afro Hair:
A Special Challenge in the Caribbean
1. Hair Relaxing
You can avoid severe hair loss with one of the most
frequently applied texture-service chemicals.
2. Shampooing and Conditioning
Shampooing and conditioning are essential to the
proper maintenance of one’s hair. Disregarding
certain aspects of either can result in hair loss.
3. Coloured Hair
Hair colouring adds much glamour to any hairstyle.
On chemically treated hair, however, it can sometimes
become a major contributing factor to hair loss.
4. Hairstyling
Styling one’s hair differently is an almostdaily
procedure for many people. Variation in
styling is fashionable and key to developing
one’s sense of style. Unfortunately, some styles
cause considerable hair loss, so care and
attention must be given to those hairstyles.
5. Heated Appliances
Little attention is paid to the damaging effects
of heated appliances on the hair. Proper use will
guarantee the health and beauty of the hair.
6. Hair Ornaments
Hair ornaments add glamour and style to the hair.
However, hair loss can occur if attention is not paid
to the way in which these ornaments are used.
7. Hair Weaving and Braiding
Weaves and braids have now become
an almost-essential aspect of hairstyling.
Improper weaving and braiding techniques,
however, can result in severe hair loss.
8. Natural Afro-Caribbean Hair
Hair loss is sometimes ignored when hair is
worn naturally. Proper care must be taken so
that the hair reflects its natural beauty.
9. Health and Hair
The health of your hair reflects the health of your
body. Attention must be paid to one’s health if
hair is expected to look beautiful and healthy.

Introduction
Relaxed and Natural Afro Hair:
A Special Challenge in the Caribbean
Taking care of natural or chemically treated hair – each has always posed its own special set of challenges. However, living in the Caribbean and having hair that has been permed, chemically relaxed, or coloured requires special care that sometimes borders on fanaticism.
On most days in the Caribbean, one’s hair is exposed to the full effects of the sun, with temperatures sometimes soaring to over eighty degrees Fahrenheit. This is further compounded by sea bathing, boat trips, constant lively breezes, and the use of chlorinated pools. While these are the very factors that travel agents use to sell a great holiday experience in the Caribbean, it is particularly worrying for the many inhabitants who have to cope with these conditions year round. While most persons usually take care to protect their skin from the dryness caused by the sun’s UV rays, they tend to ignore the protection of their hair. A hat can protect the hair from the sun; however, when hats are worn, they are usually more of a fashion accessory than a form of protection.
Relaxers
Hair that is relaxed with a sodium hydroxide-based product, for instance, is prone to dryness. As a result, the hair needs to be constantly moisturized using products with UV protection. If this is not done, severe dryness results, with the daily occurrence of hair loss.
No-lye relaxers should be used with caution, as their overuse can produce hair that is extremely dry and brittle. One might suppose that this issue could be resolved by simply relaxing the hair to a lesser degree, thus ensuring that the hair will be stronger, with far less damage to the hair strands. However, one now has to be prepared for an ongoing battle with
