Deborah Ross spent twenty years in the cosmetology industry as a licensed cosmetologist and salon owner in Miami, Florida. She provided routine hair care and solved hair mishaps for a variety of clients. Now retired, she currently lives in Orlando, Florida, where she enjoys spending time with her family. Arlon Beauregard has been a registered nurse for over thirty years. She has devoted her life to providing healthcare and counseling women on how to deal with life’s challenges. CHAPTER 1
Definition of Hair
Hair is composed of a protein called keratin, which is the same protein found in our nails and in our skin. Hair contains melanin, which determines the color of the hair.
A strand of hair has three layers. The outermost layer is called the cuticle. It is transparent and its function is to protect the inner layers. The innermost layer is called the medulla and is composed of large, loose cells that may have a hollow-like appearance. Between these two layers is the cortex.
Hair grows from the follicle (a pocket in the skin). This saclike structure surrounds the root of the hair and is found beneath the skin. Tiny blood vessels provide nutrition. During the growing phase the bottom is shaped like a bulb. The papilla (inside the bulb) is fed by tiny blood vessels that bring in oxygen and food and take away waste products.
