INTRODUCTION – WHOM ARE YOU SERVING?

Now fear the Lord and serve him with all faithfulness. Throw away the gods your forefathers worshipped beyond the River and in Egypt, and serve the Lord. But if serving the Lord seems undesirable to you, then choose for yourselves this day whom you will serve …

    — Joshua 24:14–15

Everyday, you are confronted with all kinds of decisions. You have to decide what clothes to wear, how to spend your free time on the weekend, whether to participate in physical exercise, or what to have for dinner. Advertisements bombard you, telling you what kind of car to drive, what to watch on television, who to marry, and even what to think. As you reflect over the decisions that you need to address, there is one particular decision that you may not want to ignore, put off, deny, or overlook. This decision has a bearing not only on your present, but most importantly, on your future. This decision is: where do you plan to spend eternity?

With all the juggling of time between family, work, friends, and trying to cram in a moment for yourself, the thought about what happens after death can easily become just an afterthought. Many times, it take a wake-up-call type of event—like the failure of a body part as time takes its toll on you, the diagnosis of a terminal disease, or the death of someone you know to prompt you to face your own mortality, even if only for a fleeting second. Considering the fact death is inevitable, and is one appointment you may not be able to evade or delay, when was the last time you thought about your eternal future?

There are many points of view on what happens after death. Various Eastern religions like Hinduism, Sikhism, and Buddhism believe in some form of reincarnation. Other people believe that life ends the moment you die and there’s nothing else. But I have to ask, what if there is no reincarnation? And what if the grave is not the end, and the life you are currently living is actually preparation for the afterlife? If you were to die within the next ten seconds, would you be prepared to face the results of the choices you made while living here on Earth?

According to the Holy Bible, which is the inspired and infallible Word of God, you have two choices regarding where you will spend eternity. One choice is to spend eternity with the only God who loves you by accepting his Perfect Gift. This Perfect Gift is Jesus Christ. The other choice is to be eternally separated from God by rejecting his Son Jesus, or procrastinating on the decision until it’s too late to accept him. The choice that is made (or delayed) determines where you will spend eternity.
