image1.jpgDedication
This book is dedicated to the memory of our parents, Sam and Mary Johnson. My parents passed in 1989. My mom passed on a Friday. We buried her that following Thursday. The same day of her burial, my Dad died. Only by the grace of God and the prayers of family and friends were we able to make it through this painful ordeal.
My parents didn’t leave a lot of material wealth, but they left us with a beautiful legacy and that was to fear and trust the Lord. Our parents were always praying not only for their children but the entire neighborhood. They always shared not only their home and food, but, also their skills and talents to help and encourage others. They always opened their hearts and home; especially to those coming from down home (Mississippi) who had no place to stay or no income.
We thank God always for such loving and caring parents, and we know that we have been blessed beyond measure.
Thank you Mom and Dad for praying for us when we didn’t understand to pray for ourselves. We only hope that we can be the parents, friends and neighbors that you were.
Maypole Is My First Street
We didn’t know it way back then, but that’s where Ms. Barnes and I would first meet. Maypole Avenue is a family community like no other. We are proud to be products of this 4400 block of the Garfield Park Community in Chicago. Our combined families represent one of many formable residents’ that work diligently every year. The catfish dinners, birthday parties and annual back to school block party remind us of good old fun and a coming together of spirit.
So much can be said about the inner city, but how much of it is positive? Our encouraging stories and wise thoughts can be shared when we ourselves discover this inner joy. Our young people act so hard core or why do they feel they have to? Moving to the suburbs we now know is not a deterrent to negativity. Who we truly are will follow us wherever we go.
Early on we should learn self-discipline, and self-control. Early in life we should be reminded of what’s right and what’s wrong. When we are a kid, there should be at least one adult that we trust. Some one person we can comfortably talk to and place our
