    As for courage and will - we cannot measure how much of each lies within us, we can only trust there will be sufficient to carry through trials which may lie ahead.

    The mother Panda and her cub lumbered out of the lush underbrush and into a small clearing on a misty hillside in the mountains of central China. There, lying right in the middle of the clearing was their reward… what they spent the last hour tracking by scent.

    It was a small pile of bamboo stalks and leaves. Bamboo was growing more scarce with the approach of winter and the mother panda wanted to make sure both she and her cub were well-fed.

    The mother Panda glanced from side-to-side as she made her slow approach into the clearing. She hesitated briefly, stopping to sniff the air. Sensing no danger, she again proceeded forward. Mere steps away from the tasty bamboo leaves her right rear leg was abruptly halted by a tug. The mother Panda shook hear hind leg and tried again to step toward the bamboo leaves. Something was holding her by her rear leg.

    When she tugged a second time her leg was abruptly yanked out from under her and she ended up sprawled on her belly.

    Oblivious to his mother’s perilous situation, the cub rushed past her, sat, and began nibbling on the bamboo leaves. The mother panda turned and saw a rope tied around her leg.

    She was caught in a snare.

    In a panic she moaned, swung her leg wildly and wailed for her cub to run. The young cub stopped eating the bamboo and hearing his mother’s struggle he crept toward her for safety.

    As the mother panda tried desperately to free her leg, four figures in black entered the clearing. One of the figures, a man, stepped forward, the word TURMOIL was stitched above the brim of his hat. He raised his arm and pointed a gun directly at the mother panda.

    He pulled the trigger.
