WITH LOVE & GRATITUDE
I am dedicating this book to my children and their husbands and wives who have blessed me with seven beautiful grandchildren.
Being allowed, and even encouraged to express individuality, these children can confidently be who they want to be. They can be a single entity in their own right, or they can be as one in a family unit, because with love, encouragement, positive guidance and disciplinary bounds to grow in, they are each able to express love and respect for both themselves and others without fear of judgment or reprisal.
INTRODUCTION
As with so many things in life, parenting is not an easy task. In fact it could be the hardest task we ever have in our lifetime, because there is no blueprint to follow. There is no one size fits all
when it comes to raising a child. Parenting is a mystical journey of the unknown, because your child is a unique little being who will have his/her very own traits, requiring individual attention. So, what might be beneficial for one baby may not meet the needs of another.
To help alleviate some of your doubts and insecurities, baby is going to direct you through this somewhat daunting task, by way of explanation from his/her point of view.
As a parent, you need to happily accept that you have created a 24/7 commitment involving sleepless nights, endless washing, pacing the floor with your new baby, and seemingly nonstop feeding. It will feel like utter chaos from morning to night. There will be times when you will wonder why you gave away your ‘freedom’ to take on this full time responsibility, as it is very tiring work both physically and emotionally, with absolutely no routine or system to make it easier. But, if you let it, it will prove to be very worthwhile, because in time, life will settle.
A new routine will be established, sleep deprivation won’t be as prevalent as the first few weeks, the bond between you and your baby will be growing by the day, and it’s then you will appreciate how your baby makes you a family. A happy, connected family if your attitude is positive and you nurture your baby with love and gentleness. The experience of parenthood will open up all sorts of unexpected pleasures and happiness that would otherwise not have been a part of your life; and the best part is, it’s forever.
Even though the impact of a new baby in the house can be really quite traumatic for both parents, this upheaval can be lessened by sharing as many of the responsibilities as you can, and resting as much as possible when your baby is asleep. Although still important, housework, shopping and cooking should now become less of a priority than before baby arrived. Don’t feel inadequate or ashamed to accept the help of family and friends, especially in the first 6 – 8 weeks, as
