The Flickering of the Attic Light
One day I was sick from school with the chicken pox. My mom had to take a day off work to take care of me. I mentioned to mom that I could watch myself, but she insisted that I wasn’t responsible enough. I agreed.
Meanwhile mom was applying the medicine onto my chicken pox sores. I was hot and thirsty so Mom ran downstairs to get me something to drink. She sat the medicine on my nightstand without me knowing it was there.
I’ll be right back Michael,
she said as she exited my bedroom door. I reached for my comic book on the nightstand and I accidently knocked over the red medicine which caused a red stain on the carpet.
Uh oh…,
I said as I looked at the red color drip out of the bottle. My mother enters the bedroom.
Oh honey…what happened
? she asked, as she placed the cup of orange juice on my nightstand.
I’m sorry mom.
My mom picked up the empty bottle and started cleaning up the red stain on the carpet. She grabbed a towel from the bathroom and tried to wipe up as much medicine as possible.
Michael,
Mom said. I will have to run out and get you some more medicine, if I don’t, then you will not be feeling any better honey,
she explained. And while I’m out, I will have to pick up some carpet stain remover, the cat’s food and your homework. Will you be okay until I come back?"
Um, yeah…sure mom. I will be fine,
I replied.
Well,
she added. I’ll be back soon, I love you honey.
I love you too, Mom.
Mom walked down the stairs and I lay there in bed waiting for her to walk out the front door, so I could be home all alone. I waited there until I heard the front door close and watched from my window upstairs as she pull out of the long driveway.
Yes!
I yelled as I jumped off of the bed, and onto the floor. She’s gone! So what do I want to do first?
I walked down the stairs and entered the living room. I saw my favorite snacks on the snack bar.
Wow,
I said as I grabbed chips, cakes, and peanuts from off the snack bar. I sat down and turned on the T.V., propped up on the couch and surfed the channels. I’m here all alone, no one can tell me what to do.
Suddently the phone rang.
Hello,
I answered.
Michael,
said Mom through the other end of the line. Honey, I’ll be a little longer than I thought, I have to stop by work to pick up some papers,
she explained as I listened with a grin on my face.
Oh, okay Mom,
I replied.
The phone conversation was over and I hung the phone up.
Yes…Yes…Yes!
I just sat there enjoying my time at home alone. I decided to play video game in my room so I turned the TV off and headed upstairs. Before I made it to the staircase, I noticed the attic door halfway open. I closed the door. As I walked to the room, I spotted a red-stained white towel on the floor beside the attic door. As I entered my room I began to hear a scratchy noise coming from the other side of the attic door. I ran into my room and quietly shot the door, turning everything off. I just listened to the noise, my heart was pounding as if it was about to jump out of his chest.
Thump…thump…thump.
I waited for the noise to stop. It seemed like it would never stop. I began to quietly open my bedroom door, and from my room I could see the light in the attic flickering on and off. I then heard a loud crash as if someone had knocked over something. I began to sweat and I became more and more nervous. I thought that by staying home alone, it would be a fun thing for me, but it wasn’t what I expected. I tiptoed into the bathroom across the hall from my room and locked the door. I sat on the toilet and turned the light off. I panicked as I sat in the dark bathroom, then heard a loud bang again, but
