Chapter 1:
ENGLISHA’S CRUSH
TOMORROW is my sixteenth birthday!
Englisha Regents shouted to her best friend, Laurenthina, as they entered the school building.
Tomorrow is also the last day of school. Hooray!
Laurenthina chimed in as she swiped in her ID card through the security system. Well, who are you going to invite to your party?
Okay, let’s see: you, Jasmine, Jasmina, and Clender,
Englisha said. Well, that’s all I thought of so far.
Laurenthina’s eyes opened wide. Are you telling me that you are not inviting any boys?
I don’t know, but you can tell your brother to come,
Englisha said, trying to find a seat in the lunchroom so she could eat her breakfast.
Laurenthina flipped her long, curly, light brown hair as she sat down. She was five foot two, about hundred pounds, and wore a different color eye shadow every day. Now, Laurenthina looked at Englisha as if she were crazy. Oh, come on! My brother?
Well, I could invite David, from my Spanish class,
Englisha said, uncertain. Englisha had liked David since freshman year of high school, but he had a girlfriend. When David broke up with his girl, Englisha was so happy, but she never tried to make a move on David. She thought that any guy who was so cute would always have a girlfriend. The only time Englisha talked to David was for group work in Spanish class.
Englisha thought that David was the hottest guy in the school. He had shoulder-length shiny black hair. If people were observant, they would notice how Englisha’s face would light up when David entered the room.
Englisha daydreamed about David. She thought that she would be the best girl for him. Englisha felt beautiful with her light brown eyes and her shoulder-length dark brown hair in cornrows. Her face was distinctively round. Her high cheekbones made her look as if she always had the hint of a smile.
Are you scared to ask him to your party?
Laurenthina asked with concern.
Of course I’m scared. He is the cutest guy ever, and I heard that he usually finds an excuse to say no when most girls ask him to their parties.
"Well, the best thing
