Chapter 1
MY NAME’S CHARLIE. Of course, that’s not my real name. I chose it. Australians couldn’t pronounce my real name, but no one had a problem with ‘Charlie’.
Even my mum called me Charlie when we talked on Skype. She was so happy that I was in Australia, learning English at Gatetree College, but I wasn’t happy. I loved being in Australia, but I didn’t love English. It was so difficult.
That crazy spelling! Threw. Through.
Those crazy idioms! Who says Catch ya later!
when they mean Goodbye
? Australians, that’s who. As for writing reports and essays … forget it.
So, Charlie, is everything okay?
my mum asked.
I smiled at her face on my laptop. Oh yes,
I said. Can you see I’m in the college coffee shop? I’m holding a cappuccino, and it smells wonderful.
I took a sip. Mmm, it tastes just as good. I’m going to meet my friends in a moment. I’ve got heaps of friends. Hey, here’s Victor! Victor, come over here and wave to my mum!
Victor came over and waved.
Everything’s great, Mum.
My
