    Preface

I close my eyes and drift away into a semi-conscious state. Still slightly aware of my current worldly surrounds, while grasping gently at the fronds of the spiritual world ahead. The physical world disappears as I fall asleep and enter a whole new world… a world of dreams where anything is possible… or is it? Which world is the real world???

In the crazy world that we live in, how do we separate reality from the supernatural worlds that had so much prominence in ancient times? With all the noise of the modern world, can we still hear our souls? This is a story that sees a young couple embark on a remarkable journey full of adventure and of tremendous courage.

    Chapter One

    Absolute Bliss

Jamal chuckled in quiet satisfaction at the absolute bliss that was his life. He tapped the accelerator and felt the car jolt forward as the powerful BMW engine roared majestically. Jamal was on his way back to the Elephant Hills Hotel with the rental BMW that he had just picked up. He was on honeymoon at the Victoria Falls with his new wife, Rachelle. It all seemed surreal like a dream, too good to be true! Everything had fallen into place so perfectly over the last twelve months; it was almost unbelievable. Jamal had completed his architectural qualification and had managed to get a trainee role with a prestigious architectural firm based in Brisbane. Jamal had been mainly working on a project of high-rise apartments in Brisbane; however, he also helped with designing high-quality resorts in the tourist area known as the Gold Coast in Australia. It was while he was running an errand for work that Jamal had met Rachelle, and there was an instant connection. Within a few short months, they were married, and now here they were having just arrived in the Victoria Falls that very day, after a very long flight from Australia with lots of transit points along the way. They were a very young couple, but they had known pretty much right from the moment they met that they were a perfect match.

Jamal was afraid that at any moment now, he would awaken and be back in his old single and lonely life. Before he met Rachelle, Jamal was living a typical bachelor lifestyle in addition to working as a junior architect. Meeting Rachelle had been an unexpected stroke of luck. Though, Jamal thought it was more than luck. He believed that it was destiny due to the circumstances of how they met. Jamal cast his mind back to that day.

On the day in question, Jamal had been working on some drawings when his manager approached him and asked for help. The courier who normally picked up their completed drawings to deliver to the engineers had been delayed, and those drawings were required urgently across town. Jamal was asked if he could undertake what would be an unusual task for him of delivering the drawings. Jamal was humble and readily agreed to do the menial task, and rushed to get the drawings to the engineers at the speed of light. He liked a challenge and set about zipping through the city as fast as he could, weaving deftly through the throngs of people which he did with ease, as being a former football player, he was accustomed to dribbling past defenders. He had an athletic build from playing football, and he backed this up with a muscular build from his time in the gym.

As he rounded a corner at speed, he crashed into a young lady exiting from a coffee shop, and the drawings fell to the ground, and there was coffee flying everywhere. Jamal was embarrassed and blurted out an apology. He turned towards the lady, and he was smitten immediately and froze in awe; it was as if he was looking at the very definition of beauty. The lady had the most beautiful features he had ever seen, and only the gods could have sculpted her athletic and curvaceous body. The lady gathered his drawings and handed them to him, and Jamal nervously stuttered his thanks hoping she hadn’t spotted him admiring her.

I am so sorry. Please, let me buy you another coffee, offered Jamal.

That’s okay. You look like you are in a great hurry, so you better keep going, she replied.

But Jamal was not going anywhere; he couldn’t explain it, but he felt a powerful connection to this young lady that went beyond her physical beauty. He had a feeling it wasn’t an accident that their paths had crossed so fortuitously, so he was not going to walk away without getting her number.

My name is Jamal. Please allow me to make it up to you. I see I have also messed up your clothes with coffee, so I have a lot to make up for, said Jamal apologetically.

It’s okay, it was clearly an accident, said the young lady graciously, My name is Rachelle.

She too had felt a connection between them that she couldn’t explain and she just felt as if she wanted to keep on talking to this young man she had met unexpectedly. He was so handsome and charismatic. She was afraid she might even be blushing and staring, and hoped he didn’t notice. She quickly whipped out her business card and passed it to him. Jamal looked at the business card.

Wow, you’re a finance manager. That’s impressive, said Jamal, Can I call you to take you out for lunch to make up for the coffee?

I’m counting on it, laughed Rachelle, Don’t let me down.

Jamal didn’t let her down, and in fact, they took an instant liking to each other and started meeting for lunch on a regular basis. Their friendship had blossomed and moved on to the next level very quickly. They both knew from that moment outside the coffee shop that there was a special connection between them. So it came as no surprise when, within a few short months, they were exchanging vows. And now, here they were on their honeymoon in Africa! Jamal smiled to himself as he thought about that day when they met. He believed it was fate and that while they met in an accident, he believed that their meeting was no accident.

The Elephant Hills Hotel loomed up ahead. It was a truly majestic sight that dominated the landscape, yet the architect had still managed to blend the building into its natural surroundings. Jamal soaked in the intricacies of the beautiful building that seemed to talk to him as it embraced him with its welcoming features. As Jamal had recently qualified as an architect, he was constantly analysing various buildings as he embarked on his architectural career. He only hoped that he would be able to put his mark on the landscape with such prominence. The BMW crawled into the hotel parking lot, and Jamal eased out of the vehicle with a spring in his step.

Rachelle was daydreaming on the settee when he got back to the room.

All set and ready to go exploring, my love? asked Jamal as he leaned over and gently kissed Rachelle on the lips.

Could we just take it easy for today while we recover from the trip? pleaded Rachelle.

She knew that Jamal never ran out of energy and would just keep going unless you told him to stop. So, it was a sleepy Rachelle that Jamal strapped into the passenger seat of the BMW. Rachelle got her rest lazing in her seat, and Jamal got to burn off energy as he drove them around the colourful town of Victoria Falls. It was a quaint little town and fun to explore. It was relatively easy for Jamal to find his way around as essentially there was one main road that ran through the town centre, and it connected through to various hotels and places. Jamal made mental notes as he drove, of places that he wanted to explore in more detail. The A’Zambezi River Lodge looked exciting, and that was definitely on the list of things to do. The town itself was quite small but had some colourful and fun-looking buildings.

Then there were the wildlife safari advertisements littered everywhere and then… what was that sound? It was the thunderous roar of the mighty Zambezi River as it fell more than one hundred metres over the Victoria Falls themselves! He understood now why the locals at the hotel told him that the Zimbabwean name for Victoria Falls was Mosi-oa-Tunya, which translated meant ‘the smoke that thunders’. What a perfect name, thought Jamal as he listened to the roar. His heart quickened; he had seen the amazing photos, and now he would get to see the actual Victoria Falls. But not today, Rachelle had dozed off. Drat, muttered Jamal; he never wanted to miss a single minute. However, he did catch a glimpse of what looked like smoke in the distance. He knew from the brochures that it was, in fact, the spray from the Victoria Falls that rose high into the sky catapulted by the force of which the water struck the rocky river bed below as it rushed over the falls.

The sun was setting as they pulled up into the hotel car park again and it was a typical, famed, beautiful African sunset. Rachelle stirred to life and mumbled as she returned to the real world from her dreams. She looked slightly confused and mumbled, and then slowly alighted from the car. She looked perplexed.

    What’s the matter? quizzed Jamal.

I know I had a strange dream, replied Rachelle, But the clear details are eluding me, and it is rather hazy. I do wish I could remember my dreams, but they always fade away when I wake up.

Well, chuckled Jamal, I thought I was your dream come true. That’s the only dream you need to remember.

Of course, my love, laughed Rachelle.

She loved how light-hearted Jamal was and how he always made her laugh even when her world was stressful. Rachelle worked as a finance manager for a manufacturing company, and she was always stressed out by the pressure and extreme demands of her job.

Let’s freshen up and get dinner, she said, feeling slightly more refreshed after her nap in the car.

It was coming up on seven o’clock when the two lovebirds made their appearance for dinner.

Welcome to the Samukele restaurant, beamed the friendly restaurant manager. Tendai will be your waiter tonight and do not hesitate to tell us if there is anything you need and we will do our very best to make sure that your honeymoon is special. As a gift to you, please enjoy your dinner tonight on our account.

What a lovely gesture, thank you, replied Rachelle.

It was indeed a beautiful setting overlooking the pool and golf course with the warm African air drifting in. And the food, what a spread! This kind of service was hospitality at its very best, and they ate like royalty.

So, I guess I should get used to more dinners like this? quipped Jamal.

Yeah sure, in your dreams, laughed Rachelle.

The flavours oozing from the food were amazing and nothing like they had ever tasted before. And then there was the never-ending sausage! Boerewors is what the locals called it.

I gotta take some of that back to Aussie! Jamal had said to the waiter.

Jamal loved his food and was thoroughly enjoying his meal.

Rachelle watched Jamal adoringly as he tucked in and quipped, Hey, how about leaving some for the other guests?

Sure thing, laughed Jamal, I’m headed to the dessert train as I think there was a crème brûleé with my name on it. Fancy joining me or do you want me to bring something back for you?

Soon, Jamal, with arms full of bowls sporting various desserts and with Tendai in tow with even more desserts, made his way back to the table! There was everything imaginable: ice-cream, chocolate mousse, crème caramel, crème brûleé, mud cake… Jamal was having it all.

What an amazing meal that was! said Jamal gleefully as they walked back to their room, You gonna help me work it off, my love?

Rachelle giggled, What have I married? Your energy levels are insane.

The suite door closed on the blissful couple as they went on to celebrate the honeymoon suite in traditional fashion.

The morning African sun stretched its warm golden fingers all around the Elephant Hills Hotel, and the birds sang ever so beautifully. This morning glory was Africa at its best! The breakfast spread was equally as amazing as the dinner, and as a bonus, they had more of the amazing boerewors. Aaah, this was the life. For the onlooker, they were an amusing yet fascinating couple to watch. They seemed to read each other’s minds and go through their actions with such chemistry without the need for words it was enthralling.

They made the perfect picture, Rachelle in all her dazzling beauty was every man’s dream, and Jamal with his rugged looks and perfectly sculpted muscles was the ideal alpha male. But it was not their external beauty that defined this couple; it was the strength of their characters and the depth of their personalities. It was these fascinating personalities that saw them attract a solid circle of friends back in Australia. Jamal was one of those extraordinary people that are quite rare who excel at both sport and academics. He was very popular throughout his school life; however, he was selective of his friends and limited it to a small circle of trusted friends. Rachelle was athletic too, but she had focused more on her academic prowess. Her character was more private than open, and she too chose to have a small circle of trusted friends as opposed to a large group. Her considerate nature though made her popular and respected amongst her fellow school mates. So it was indeed not surprising that their two personalities made a very good match up. Their ancestral backgrounds, though, were rather different.

Jamal’s heritage was African, and that had influenced their choice of honeymoon destination. His grandmother was African, and his grandfather was of Indian origin though he had never met him. Even Jamal’s father barely knew him as he had disappeared from their lives when Jamal’s dad was just five years old. Jamal’s parents, Adam and Aisha, had migrated to Australia when he was still a toddler, and he had undergone all his schooling in Australia. They were not wealthy, and so Jamal had a humble upbringing. Due to their financial limitations, they had not been able to travel back to Africa since the migration, and so Jamal was a stranger to Africa. However, as his grandmother Maila had migrated with them she endeavoured to make sure that Jamal retained his connection to the African culture. She would take care of Jamal when his parents were gone to work, and they had developed a very close bond as Jamal grew. She told him stories of Africa, about the people, and also about her life. At times Jamal thought there was something mystical about her. He recalled his father once telling him that his grandmother was a witch doctor at one stage, but she had discontinued that practice. Adam said she never explained why, but she was very shaken up about it at the time.

In fact, it was a humble home that was so full of love and joy in which Jamal grew up. And so it was very tragic when first his father and then his grandmother passed away in quick succession when Jamal was only eighteen years old. Adam had died from complications arising from surgery on his heart. A few weeks after that, Maila had been killed rather traumatically in a hit and run, and the guilty driver had never been found. It was a very difficult period for Jamal because he never really allowed himself to grieve at that time as he made the decision to be strong for his mother who had taken the death of Adam very hard. She had also developed a warm bond with Maila over the years, so her sudden death shortly after the loss of Adam severely compounded her trauma.

Jamal had taken over a lot of responsibility to take the burden away from his mother and in so doing, moved into the responsibility of adulthood very quickly. To cope with this, he absorbed himself with his studies in architecture while taking on part time work to bring income into the household. Interestingly, Jamal was a very talented footballer with an excellent chance of making it as a professional, but sadly he had given it all up when the tragedy struck. He stuck to that decision despite protestations from his mother because she did not want him to give up his dream, but Jamal was reluctant to leave his mother while he pursued his football dream abroad, as there were no guarantees following that path. That was typical of Jamal, always putting those he loved ahead of his needs.

Rachelle, on the other hand, had an English heritage and had grown up in Australia too. Her parents Ralph and Michelle lived in Brisbane too. Both were finance professionals and had amassed a fair bit of wealth, and so Rachelle had a privileged lifestyle. She had a brother and sister, Jerry and Ann. They were a very close-knit family and not too dissimilar to Jamal’s family regarding core values which reflected that despite the differing cultures, the core life values were common between them. The two families had hit it off from the word go, and both families had accepted and welcomed each other. In fact, Aisha and Michelle had grown quite close and developed a sister-like bond.

Now they were a reflection of two families and multiple cultures combined at the breakfast table. Love does not see differences; there is only love. They locked eyes and laughed joyfully. It was a perfect morning, perfect company and a perfect life. With breakfast done and dusted, it was time to get to the business at hand: exploring the Victoria Falls.

    Chapter Two

    The Mighty Victoria Falls

It was mid-morning when Jamal and Rachelle alighted from their car in the parking lot of the Victoria Falls. The warm African sunshine caressed their faces as the thunder of the Victoria Falls grew louder as they walked towards the entrance gate. At this stage, they could hear the Victoria Falls but could not yet see them.

Welcome to Mosi-oa-Tunya, our Victoria Falls! beamed the attendant at the entrance.

After paying the entrance fee and arming themselves with a map of the pathways around the Falls, Jamal and Rachelle set off with an air of excitement.

As they got closer to the Falls, the thunderous roar grew in volume, and the spray that had thus far been very light began to intensify.

Maybe we should have taken the umbrellas on offer, said Rachelle.

More fun to soak in the Falls, laughed Jamal.

They rounded the corner and got their first glimpse of the Falls.

Oh my, what an amazing sight! exclaimed Rachelle, No wonder they say angels stop in their flight to look upon the Falls.

From that moment on, the morning was filled with gasps of amazement and wonder from Jamal and Rachelle at the incredible views to which they were treated. The mighty Zambezi River rushed over the rock face and fell over one hundred metres down the gorge with such force that huge clouds of spray splashed up and rained down upon them, soaking them. This was the spray that was visible from the town centre and looked like a cloud of mist rising from the ground.

The trail edged closer to the Falls, and Jamal quickened his pace in excitement.

    Hang on, Pecs! pleaded Rachelle.

Pecs was her pet name for Jamal as he spent so much time in the gym sculpting his muscles much to Rachelle’s liking, in particular, his pectorals. That strength and athleticism were very hard to keep up with at times, and this was one of those times.

Sorry, I just got overexcited, apologised Jamal as he gently linked his arm into Rachelle’s.

They sauntered on, looking every bit the honeymoon couple.

Up ahead the trail seemed to fall away. When they got to the spot, they discovered that steps had been cut into the rock face and they went almost halfway down into the gorge. The staircase looked amazing, what would the view of the Falls be like from that viewpoint? Words cannot convey the
