Chapter One
Many men of different sizes and shapes stood outside of a hospital room door. Some of the men had different shades of color and others tanned with scars across their face. Some men leaned against the walls as others sat in the chairs. Nurses and doctors moved back and forth through the halls and stepped over the men’s feet as they didn’t want to disturb them. Chaos ensued as the medical professionals moved to help other patients in rooms. Beeping sounds and cries were heard throughout. A nurse stopped by one of the men who had a long-etched scar across his face and a twin glass eye. He held a cane in his hand as he leaned against it. He gritted his teeth as he looked at the nurse.
I’m sorry, Mr. Carney, but your friend, Abel is not going to make it,
the nurse revealed.
Mr. tapped his cane hard on the ground as the nurse moved her feet back, that’s not good enough. His wounds are superficial.
I’m sorry, Mr. Carney, but since you can’t see… he is bleeding internally and there isn’t much we can do about that. I have given all the medicine that he can have. The doctor has given his prognosis on this.
The nurse further mentioned.
He tapped his cane again and rolled his eyes, even a blind man can see that his wounds are superficial.
The nurse sauntered away rolling her eyes. Mr. Carney yelled after her. Other men surrounded the elderly man to help him circle him. He stood hunched over then tapped his cane on the floor. As Mr. Carney ambled, other nurses and doctors moved out of his way.
I told you, that Sketch isn’t dead. His wounds aren’t serious,
he yelled.
One man with a green hat, a lean figure and leather shoes clanked against the floor. His tanned skin and retro suit stood out. Mr. Carney stopped and narrowed his eyes as he sensed the man before him was bad news.
What do you want, Stan?
Mr. Carney barked out.
I came to pay my respects to Sketch, since he is passing,
Stan retorted.
Mr. Carney glowered then started to go by him, I know he will live. That bastard has more than one life. He’s just faking it.
Stan rolled his eyes, for the elderly man was blind and dumb to him. He pondered for a second how he moved through life with denial. One of the associates had called him over an hour ago telling him that Sketch was dying. Sketch was admitted hours ago and had a bleeding wound that couldn’t be fixed. He assumed that the doctors and nurses tried to convince the old man that his good friend was dying.
Okay, Mr. Carney,
Stan said then strolled passed the old man.
Mr. Carney walked down the hallway, shouting and raising his cane. He turned his head to anticipate where Stan was going. The slide doors opened and another man with a dark brown hair, chocolate eyes, and a lean figure strode through. His curly wavy hair was slicked back. Soft scruffy hairs grazed his chin and under over his top lip. He glanced around him as the busy hospital moved about. He stood in a black turtle neck, slacks and dark shoes. His white honey skin glistened under the bright lights.
Other men around him dipped their hands into their pockets. Mr. Carney began to further down hall but stopped by a particular smell. His nose sniffed cologne.
Sheen is that you?
Mr. Carney called out.
Sheen strolled over to him and chuckled looking at the old man then glanced down toward the room. He narrowed his eyes as the other figures stood near the door.
Yes, Mr. Carney. I came as soon as I can,
Sheen nodded.
Mr. Carney turned to him and tapped his cane on the floor again, go take a look at Sketch. He ain’t dead.
Sheen rolled his eyes and nodded. Mr. Carney stopped Sheen then wrapped his arms around him. He hugged the younger man and stood quiet for a few seconds. As he stepped back, he patted Sheen’s pocket lightly without him noticing then stepped away.
Say your last goodbyes to Sketch,
his voice darkened then quickly exited the hallway.
Sheen nodded as he noticed the elderly man left. Mr. Carney was the head of the family. He recognized all the members yet didn’t lead as he should. He was a passing figure who gave orders, yet stood in the background. He was blind running a major crime family organization. He was well retired, but some old habits stood out.
Sheen strode down the hallway and passed the other thugs standing by the door. He walked into the room to see machines plugged up to Sketch. He heave a sighed while looking through the cover sheet around his bed. Sheen realized that Mr. Carney was in denial, because one of his family members was dying.
Sheen placed his hands around his head as he moved forward. He moved the sheet over and peered down at a man with gray hair, in a hospital gown, and covered with sheets. The man had slight wrinkles on his forehead. He looked up at Sheen and sighed. Tubes and ivy cords ran down the side.
Sheen, you came…
the man tried to talk, but it came out hoarse.
Sheen shook his head as he saw the state of his old friend, Abel, why didn’t you let me help you with this. I could have helped you.
Abel coughed up some blood then wiped a part of the gown onto his mouth. I didn’t want to tell you. Your retired from the life you were living. I didn’t want to do that to you. I did a last job…
Abel glanced at the door then pointed for Sheen to close it. Sheen stood up
