    Glossary

Baobhan sith (baa’-van shee): Vampiric fey who roam the Scottish Highlands. They can travel from underhill to earth through a cairn. They are always female, their victims are always men. They wear green gowns and have talons, but no fangs. Like other vampire types, they drink human blood and fry in the sunlight. Often referred to as dancing vampires, they target young men coming from pubs at night. The baobhan sith dance with them until the men grow exhausted. Then the vampiric temptresses transform their long nails into talons and rake them across the men’s backs, clawing at their victims’ skin, draining their blood, then drinking it. You can banish a baobhan sith by replacing the loose stones of the cairn.

Bodhran (bow rawn): The traditional goatskin drum used in Celtic music and ritual.

Cairn: A mound or pile of stones, usually a memorial or a marker.

Fianna (fee AE n uh): A legendary band of warriors who fought for the High King of Ireland.

Irn-Bru (iron brew): A highly popular orange-flavored soft drink in Scotland.

Sugh seirc (sooch sheerk): From Irish mythology; the dimple or mark on the god Diarmiud’s forehead that makes him irresistible to women.

Tablet (taib let): A Scottish sugary confection much like fudge, but not as soft and with a grainier texture.

Underhill: The realm or dimension of the fey, it is entered through the ground. The gods and the fey live there together.

    The Gods

Angus Og (Ang gus Oag): God of youth, love and beauty.

Caer Ibormeith (Kee yair EE bore meeth): Goddess of sleep and dreams who often took the form of a swan. She is the wife of Angus Og.

Dagda (dahg duh): Father figure god, he has immense power and a magic club and cauldron.

Diarmiud (Dear mid): Son of Donn and a warrior of the fianna. He has a love spot on his forehead and any woman who looks at it falls in love with him.

Donn (Doun): God of the dead. He is Dairmuid’s father but he gave him to Angus Og to raise.

Goibniu (Go van on): A blacksmith god, one of three brother gods who forged weapons.

Morrigan (Mo-rih-gAWn): Goddess of war and death. All the dark fey have aspects of her.

    Chapter One

Murdina should have immediately told her sisters a stone had fallen from the highland cairn. She didn’t. When she glanced in the well earlier and saw the light in it, she knew.  It was what she’d been waiting for. With the portal to the human realm open, she sneaked out of her round hut and made her way to the nearby cave. She stilled her thoughts and passed like vapor through the rock wall underhill and to the sod of Scotland.

Before her vision adjusted, she heard booming, high-toned, textured music vibrating through the air. Murdina’s bare feet tickled as she shuffled across the soft grass beside the mound of rocks. She breathed in the rich, spicy fragrance of myrtle growing across the field. Grass wavered in the breeze as the setting sun whisked ribbons of orange, purple and gold across the evening sky.

A sandy-haired man strutted down the narrow, paved road, one arm wrapped around his bagpipes, the mouthpiece stuffed between
