INTRODUCTION
California was a magical place to be especially in the San Francisco Bay area, in the 60’s. If anything new was happening, it was a happening place. Lying on the Western Coast of America, San Francisco Bay was a vibrant, young, funky liberated city. A Garden of Eden in the sun a place for exploration, liberation, youth culture and the emergence of a new way of living. Hippies ruled the roost and anything could happen and it did. From the shadows of a glorious sun lit city emerged a figure that would terrorise the American state into submission. His name was Zodiac, a cold bloodied killer, as elusive as the scarlet pimpernel but in no way as friendly. He said, his killings were a bloody means to collect ‘slaves’ for the afterlife who would serve him in paradise. The San Francisco Police Department knew they had on their hands a cold blooded evil murdering psychological maniac.
In many ways Zodiac was the first terrorist before people even heard of the term, a pathological killer. Yet he revealed there was a chilling logic to his murdering intent and displayed an intelligence in committing crimes few have mastered. This book outlines these crimes of unfathomable atrocity against innocent young people at a time when hope was in their hearts. Shocking then as it is now to go over this case. His crimes have made me look again at this case, to take a stab at deciphering his unsolved ciphers. This book comes at the tail end of a trilogy of crime books this year I have written. I make no apologies it a case worthy to be included among them by merit of
