    Moonshadow - Maggie Mitchell

An eclipse is when the Sun-woman is hidden by the Moon-man as he makes love to her.

The Warlpiri people of the Northern Territory, Australia

    Chapter One

MELANIE SOLIS RUBBED her back while she headed up the stairs to her flat. It ached, as it often did, after another long night in the emergency department at Sydney Hospital where she worked as a registered nurse. When she reached the hallway on her floor she sped up, flying past number six, the apartment where he lived. It wasn’t like she was avoiding him or anything, but lately her neighbour had developed this habit of leaving his door open and parading around without a shirt. Given that he was somewhere over six feet tall and built like a romance novel cover model, his face was pretty damn fine too. She may have given up men, but she wasn’t dead.

Thankful for his closed door, she blew out a breath as she slipped her hand into her pocket to grab her keys. But before she placed the key into the lock, a door behind her opened and closed. Don’t look. Don’t look.

Crap. She turned her head. There he is. Smiling his sexy megawatt smile right at her. Since good manners were in her DNA, she automatically smiled back. Her mother would be so proud, but now, if she was to be honest, wasn’t a situation she’d prepared for. Oh God, he smells so good too. Maybe she could just take a short peek. Big mistake. She’d read about eyes twinkling before, but she’d never seen it until now. His baby blues twinkled. Men should not be that gorgeous, ever! Especially not when she’d decided to give them up. It just wasn’t fair. Maybe if she held her breath and closed her eyes, he’d go away.

Hi, said a voice as smooth as chocolate. Unless a vortex opened up and swallowed her, she wouldn’t escape this. She opened her eyes just in time to see him heave a backpack over his very impressive shoulders and move towards her, holding out his hand.

    I’m Sam Kale, he said.

She stared at his very large and very tanned hand and back to his drop-dead gorgeous face. She did not want to touch him but it seemed she didn’t have a choice. Damn her mother and her bloody manners.

She stuck her hand out in his direction. I’m Melanie. If she didn’t make eye contact she wouldn’t really bond with him, would she?

    Clunk.

Oh crap. Her keys dropped to the floor. She leaned down to pick them up and bam—her head connected with a wall of something hard and muscly. She made a desperate attempt to stop herself from falling, and before she knew it, she was touching smooth warm skin.

    Um, ah...Melanie?

What the heck had she done? Oh. My. God. Oh. My. God. She removed her hands from his sculptured abs, then shuffled backwards, wobbling as she went and almost losing her balance. Luckily, she managed not to fall on the way back up, which was something to be thankful for and, given how deliciously spicy his after shave was, it was pretty much miraculous. I’m so sorry. Her face was now burning hot with droplets of sweat trickling down her forehead. Kill me now. I don’t normally grope people I’ve just met.

He laughed. I would have thought you did that all the time.

    Excuse me?

Your scrubs, he said, pointing to her clothes. "You must work at a hospital.  I imagine you touch people all the time in your line of
