    INTRODUCTION

Sumi-E was brought to Japan by Zen Priests in the 13th century and is closely linked to the philosophy of Zen Buddhism.

I have introduced Sumi-E and taught to both Danish and foreign students since 1987 in Denmark. I learned Sumi-E in Tokyo by Sumi-E master Shutei Ohta.

Sumi-E is one of the traditional arts in Japanese culture and their family takes over school and art names.

I have decided to write Sumi-E book because there are many people who are interested in trying to keep Japanese/Chinese brush with black ink and to draw a line with black and white nuance.

I hope the book will be useful to the reader. I'm also glad that I can present Sumi-E here and I could use my collection of china bone.

Finally, I thank Sten Lottrup Knudsen who has checked my English language.
