Chapter 1
Rose
I f you don’t come get your stuff out of my apartment before Monday, I’m going to throw it in the dumpster!
I pressed the screen to hang up, pissed at the audacity of my ex. I hadn’t even seen him in over a month, but he still had boxes at my place. Boxes I had to pack, because he wasn’t going to do it.
He was always that way, though. I just didn’t see it at the time, that he was a complete waste of space, time, and energy. I’d enjoyed cooking for him, doing the laundry, and taking care of my man. I was even paying his college tuition so we wouldn’t be stuck with a ton of debt once he finished school.
My best friend, Tori, did see it, though. She told me that he was using me, but I defended him, telling her that he was going to college full time for his bachelor’s degree in computer security. Once he had his degree, he’d get a great job making three times my teacher’s salary to start and then everything would be perfect. And I was right... partially.
He did get an incredible job within a couple months of finishing school, and then he dumped me and moved in with some bitch in the HR department at his office.
Well, I wasn’t going to worry about it this weekend. I was throwing a huge summer bash that was just for me to celebrate my birthday. I’d always been the girl who stood back and told everyone else I didn’t want them to make a fuss on my account, but this year would be different. My twenty-fifth birthday was going to be crazy because I deserved nothing less. I scrolled through my phone contacts and pressed Tori’s number.
Hey chickie,
came her voice from my cell, sounding cheerful as usual, what’s up? Ready for an awesome party weekend?
Hell yeah!
I said, faking excitement. Oh, the excitement was there. Just subdued as I swept my glance across the apartment, reminded of the grim reality that my ex’s stuff was still a part of my life, even though he wasn’t.
Oh no, you sound a bit pissed and sad,
Tori said. Did you call that douche again?
Well, yeah. But I need him to get his shit out of here.
I glared at the boxes stacked next to the front door.
Rose, you should have thrown it away the minute that whore picked him up in her BMW. He left you and he left his stuff, and he doesn’t deserve you or it. I can come over and help carry it to the trash chute.
Tori sounded thrilled with the prospect of shoving his crap into the dumpster. I kind of liked the idea, too, but I’d always been a high road sort of person. It was a hard habit to break.
Not right now.
I threw a few shirts into my suitcase, rolling my eyes at my phone. "I’m not going to even think about him. And when I come back here, it’ll be a new school year and new me. As you keep telling me, out with the old and in with the new. I’ll throw it all away the moment I get back. You can even have his clothes to burn if you want. I just
