This wasn't the glamorous job that he had expected when he graduated from college. Joseph had actually kept his head in his books and showed up for class and kept his binge drinking to a spring vacation in Cancun and yet, this was what he had to show for it. His big break wasn't a management position that was on the fast track to a corner office and a shiny nameplate that said Vice President in bold letters. His first real job was in the mail room at Global Tech, he wasn't even running the mail room, Joseph rolled his eyes and sighed as he grabbed another bundle of mail by the rubber band. He was a delivery boy.

Joseph had tried explaining it to his parents in far grander terms than that, so, what you're telling me is that you deliver the mail from office to office? his father had made a face, the usual face when he considered almost any new facts about his son. Joseph wasn't manly enough, he wasn't smart enough, he wasn't tough enough and it was too bad if he preferred Joseph, his Dad was going to call him Joe. That's what four years of college gets you now, is that it? his mother didn't even step up for him this time and that meant that he was on his own with the man who had pushed him to go to college in the first place.

It's got potential, he lied, they promote people from the mail room all the time. He should have dropped out in sophomore year and toured with the garage band. Joseph would have had better stories about school at least, stories about weekends that were a blur and banging twin sisters, stories that the guys in the mail room would want to hear. As it was, he was almost positive after working here for three weeks, that anyone else in the mail room had a better chance of getting promoted than he did.
