    Shining On - Adam Holbrook

    Preface

When a family friend returned to me the proof of my first book, Dear Mom, after reading it, she was enthusiastic about the story and urged me to write a sequel.

My friend told me that Dear Mom left many unanswered questions about what became of me following my return from the cross country jaunt which was the subject of my first literary composition.

Encouraged by her response to my first genuine literary endeavor, I began work on this book, a sequel to Dear Mom. It is aptly titled Shining On.

    Introduction

In retrospect, my first book was not difficult at all to write. Aside from searching my cluttered memory banks for the most noteworthy events surrounding my journey of 1977-78 and leafing through my worn thesaurus in search of just the right words to use, writing Dear Mom was not taxing nor was it particularly painful.

I suppose that it is because I was relating events which took place long ago and far away. This enabled me to write Dear Mom with some degree of detachment, much as a news reporter would write about a bus bombing which took place last April.

The writing of Shining On, however, could

not be approached in that manner. I was not writing about places and events from which I could stand aloof or detached. This book took me back home to the people and places I had known since my early childhood.

In this book I confess to the brutish abuse of those who loved me, including God.

Yes, Shining On has been both emotionally taxing and painful to write, but I was compelled to tell this story. Not for the sake of my loved ones alone did I write, but for all the families of those stricken with mental illness.

Yes, there can be a happy ending.
