Jake checked his phone again before leaving the subway station and venturing into his favorite part of the city, the part he called home, the South End, also known as the gay part of town. The air smelled fresh and the late summer sun was high in the sky. He walked along Tremont Street and stopped off at a bookshop—one of the oldest ones in this part of Boston.

He loved the smell of books, and the older, the better. The entire shop was intoxicating to him. Jake wandered up and down the aisles. Finally, he settled in the science fiction section and checked out the covers, looking for something futuristic, dystopian, or just plain adventurous.

A few customers browsed around the shop, women and men. A few of the men were lost in their chosen books, sitting either in small wooden chairs or cross-legged on the floor. For a moment, Jake pulled his attention away from the science fiction section and checked out every guy in the place. He couldn’t help himself.

Jake was lucky. He didn’t have a real type. He liked all kinds of guys—short, tall, older, younger, silver foxes, bears, twinks. It all depended on the guys themselves, their personalities, their smile, or their eyes. It could be anything. Jake like variety and that trait was why he was able to be self-employed. That was why his chosen profession worked so well for him. It was why his clients loved him. He made them all feel…special. It was also the reason why he was able to afford a small studio apartment in the posh South End all by himself.

This was where it was all happening. This was where every gay man wanted to be. The excitement of the city, the hundreds of things to do. The people watching alone was a spectator sport. He studied a young twenty-something with rimmed glasses and dark, wavy hair. The dude was clean-shaven, but with a little stubble. Jake liked that. The guy was utterly captivated with what he was reading.

Jake’s gaze swept from the man with the glasses to a tall, thin guy browsing the history books. He wore khakis and a button down shirt. He looked a little overdressed for the weather, but, still, there was something about him. His dirty blond hair was a bit tussled. He had broad shoulders, something Jake also liked.

Again, Jake found his gaze wandering, moving this time to a third man, older than himself, bald, with a dad bod. But Jake still found him as sexy as the others and imagined how experienced he might be in bed. Not that he had any lack of indulgence. His clients kept him pretty busy.

Suddenly, Jake remembered why he was in the bookshop. He grabbed a book with a flashy cover, something from the Eighties, and headed up to the counter. There, his favorite clerk greeted him, a college student with a baby face, dimples, a mole on his cheek, and the most beautiful hazel eyes he’d ever seen.

Hey, Chris, Jake said with a huge smile. What’s going on?

Not too much. Ah. This is a good one. Chris the clerk picked up the pulpy sci-fi paperback and checked the back before ringing it up.

    Really? You’ve read it?

    Yeah, and the two sequels.

Huh. I didn’t know it was a series.

Chris nodded. The others are good, but this is the best one.

Thanks for the info. Oh, no, I don’t need a bag. You should know me by now. Jake gently took the book from Chris’s hands and slipped it into his backpack. Thanks. Catch ya later.

    Later. Enjoy the book.

Jake looked him in his beautiful eyes and smiled again. I will. He winked before heading out into the street.

He caught the scent of food in the air and his stomach growled. He knew exactly what to do. Down another block, his favorite gourmet sandwich shop filled the need. They made everything from scratch and served tons of herbal teas and exotic coffees.

Hey, Jake, Riley, the auburn-haired, blue-eyed guy behind the counter called. The usual?

You got it. Chicken salad on a bagel, hold the tomato, and a green iced tea.

I like a man who knows what he wants.

Me, too. Jake shot him a grin. Ah,
