About this ebook

Alpha Lex and omega Stewart shared an instant, passionate attraction to each other when Lex stood up for the omega when a bar patron was hassling him.  After spending the night together, they make plans to meet up the next day. But when Lex cancels, and gives no real explanation other than he's leaving the country, Stewart has no choice but to put the promising romance behind him.

When Lex returns to Poppy Field eight months later, he wants to rekindle things with Stewart. But Stewart isn't ready to jump into anything with the secretive cowboy. He knows Lex is the kind of alpha he could settle down with, and that's exactly what Stewart is looking to do. Settle down. But how can he trust his heart to Lex, when the cowboy might leave town again on a moment's notice?

    Prologue

It was hard to take my eyes off of Lex as he sat beside me at the bar. The sexy cowboy had just chased off some jerk who’d mistook me for someone else on Grindr. Lex was pleasant on the eyes; blond hair poked out under his cowboy hat, and he had light green eyes that seemed to look right through me. Nice lean body too. I had to admire his protective streak toward me. While most alphas would stand up for their own omega, many weren’t willing to get involved when it wasn’t really their problem.

Sure I can’t get you a drink? I asked him softly. I’d been about ready to go home when that other alpha had started hassling me. But now I kind of liked the idea of sitting here with Lex a while longer.

Nah. I still haven’t finished this one. He smiled and little dimples appeared in his smooth, tanned cheeks. He eyed my almost empty glass. Can I get you one?

    I shrugged. Depends.

    On what?

I allowed a flirty smile. On whether or not you’ll stick around and keep me company while I drink it. I scanned the thinning crowd. I didn’t usually hang here too long past midnight. That was usually when the desperation set in with a lot of the Wild Poppy Club’s drunken patrons.

He licked his lips and nodded slowly. I’ll hang around as long as you’d like.

Little shivers rippled through me at his husky tone. Shit. Then I’ll definitely have another drink.

He smiled and motioned to the bartender.

I don’t think I’ve seen you in here before. I leaned back against the bar.

Yeah, I’m not big on clubs.

Are you originally from Poppy Field?

No. I’ve only been here about three months.

    Where from?

I was working on a ranch in Australia for the last two years.

But you’re not originally from there, right? You have a little Texas twang. I took my drink from the bartender, and Lex paid him. Thanks. I lifted my drink and met his warm gaze.

You bet. He cleared his throat. No, I’m not from Australia. I was born in Sweet Water, Texas.

So what were you doing down under for two years? I grinned as I put on a fake Aussie accent.

His lips twitched. That’s not a half bad attempt.

Thanks. I noticed he hadn’t answered my question. I wasn’t sure if that was on purpose or if he had just been distracted by my horrible Australian accent. I sipped my margarita and then forced myself to repeat my question. So why were you in Australia?

He dropped his gaze and his jaw tensed. It’s kind of complicated.

It was obvious he didn’t really want to talk about it, so I didn’t push. But I had to wonder though why he was being so secretive. Had he left a lover behind or something? I glanced at his fingers and didn’t see any ring. If he’d just been there for a job, I wasn’t sure why he’d be so cagey about his answer.

I shrugged, pretending his reticence to talk didn’t bother me. It’s none of my business anyway. I was just making conversation.

His expression was hidden by his thick lashes as he stared at his boots. Maybe when I know you a little better, I’ll share my sad story.

Whatever. It doesn’t matter either way. I hoped I sounded disinterested.

It’s just that I’d like to forget about real life for one night.

Got it. I faked a smile. It’s no problem.

His mouth had a sad tilt. You sure about that?

Of course. We’d known each other, at most, forty-five minutes. He didn’t owe me any details about himself. If I was lucky, we might end up sleeping together tonight. Wasn’t that really why I was here? I hadn’t come to The Wild Poppy for good conversation. I was here to get laid, and Lex was exactly what I’d have hoped for in a prospective sexual partner. In fact, he was more than I’d hoped for. So what can you tell me about yourself that won’t bring back that depressed expression?

He grimaced. Let’s see… I have a one bedroom apartment, no pets, and I prefer showers over baths.

The one bedroom apartment doesn’t depress you?

Nope. It’s all mine. I have one older brother who I had to share a room with growing up. Having my own place, even if it’s small, is better than a self-milking cow.

I laughed. Is that a thing?

    Nope. He grinned.

My stomach fluttered at the warmth of his smile. There was something about Lex that just felt right. I usually got nervous around alphas because they could be unpredictable, but his quiet energy calmed me. What made you step in tonight?

You mean when that asshole was annoying you?

    Yeah.

He lifted one shoulder. I don’t appreciate it when alphas act like they can just take what they want.

I studied his angular features. But it wasn’t really your problem.

He flicked his gaze to mine. I made it mine.

My pulse spiked. Yeah. You did. I swallowed. Few things are sexier than an alpha standing up for an omega.

    Is that right?

To me anyway. I felt breathless.

He shifted his position and his knee touched mine. He seemed in no hurry to move it away either. Maybe I’m old fashioned, but I feel like an alpha’s job is to protect the omega. We’re not supposed to bully you.

    Alphas like Sexy69 obviously disagree.

He wrinkled his brow. Who cares what a coyote dropping like him thinks?

I smiled. You really didn’t like him.

Of course not. First of all, he was disrespectful to you, and secondly he makes alphas look bad. Why would omegas trust us if we act like selfish barbarians?

You’re very enlightened for an alpha.

I’m a work in progress. He dropped his gaze shyly. I haven’t always been this… open minded.

It’s hard to picture you dragging an omega around by the hair. What changed you?

He hesitated. I’ve witnessed up close and personal the destruction a bad alpha can cause. He cleared his throat and finished off his drink.

I knew he wanted to change the subject from his tense body language, so I obliged. Oh, I wanted to let you know that my store has a sale coming up soon on flannel shirts. I smirked.

He squeezed his eyes closed and laughed. It was a nice throaty sound and my pulse bumped up again. I can’t believe you guys have a nickname for me.

Flannel shirt guy isn’t really that original.

It is for me. I can’t say anyone ever nicknamed me before.

I lifted my brows. Seriously? How did you get through school without any nicknames?

He frowned. I don’t rightly know. I just know nobody ever called me anything other than Lex.

Huh. I shook my head. I wish I’d been that lucky.

You got picked on in school? He truly sounded surprised.

Oh, yeah. I was a late bloomer. I was pretty short until I hit sixteen and then I shot up.

He ran his gaze over my body. You seem like you turned out all right to me.

My face warmed at his intense scrutiny. Thanks.

He lowered his head. No problem. It’s the truth. He glanced around. But then you probably already know you’re a good looking guy.

    Well… I know I’m not ugly.

Pfft. Far from it. His eyes were heated.

I fanned myself. How did we get on this subject again?

He laughed. I like your modesty. It’s cute.

    Cute?

He must have seen my muddled expression because he laughed and said, Sorry. I’ve been hanging around with cows and sheep a little too much lately. I haven’t tried to pick anyone up in a long while.

I was excited when he mentioned trying to pick me up. It let me know I hadn’t read him wrong. I’d hoped that was where we were headed. I guess the word ‘cute’ always makes me think of eight-year-old girls with pig tails. I’m trying my hardest to be alluring in a very manly way.

He snorted a laugh, and his cheeks tinted pink. "Yeah. Sorry. I’m not
