THE JOURNEY BEGINS
Dawn.
A jogger makes her way down the empty path. The path twists and turns around the trees that fill the park. The entire path overlooks a beautiful man-made lake.
As the jogger continues to run, something catches her eye. She comes to a sudden stop. She looks towards the lake.
Climbing out is a chubby young boy. Behind him, also coming out of the lake, is a dog. He exhales and coughs. The dog does the same. The two of them walk in a confused haze past the woman. She watches, unsure of what to say. She looks around. There’s no one else in the park. The Jogger grabs her cellphone and dials a number. The other end of the line picks up.
9-1-1. What’s your emergency?
The boy walks down the sidewalk dripping wet, taking in all the sites and sounds. The dog continues to stay by his side.
The street is mostly empty and the few people that pass by don’t notice the Young Boy in his fragile state. As the Young Boy walks he seems to be looking for something. He stumbles into a dark alley and calls out.
Hello!?
No answer. He continues to walk deeper into the alley. The dog begins to whimper, not wanting to go any further. The young boy looks back at the dog but doesn’t say anything, the confusion continuing to grow on his face.
BEHIND A DUMPSTER, rattling sounds are heard. A moment later a homeless man appears and looks at the boy.
Who are you?
says the man. The boy doesn’t respond. There something wrong with you?
The young boy stands in place as the homeless man moves closer to him. You’re soaking wet,
continues the man. It hasn’t rained here in days.
Where am I?
An Atlanta alley, kid.
He moves closer to the boy. What’s boy like you doing downtown all by himself at this hour?
The young boy begins to back step. The homeless man stops approaching. I don’t know,
says the boy.
Your parents give you any money?
The man reaches out. The young boy goes to step back but is grabbed by the shirt sleeve. Have anything valuable in those pockets?
Fear fills the boy’s eyes. Just then, the sound of a dog’s vicious bark begins to fill the air. The homeless man looks towards the opening of the alley and sees the dog sprinting into the alley, towards the boy and himself. The man pushes the boy away from him, towards the dog, who weaves around the boy and lunges at the man’s leg. The dog bites it, causing the man to yell out in pain. The young boy takes off running towards the street. The dog lets go of his bite and chases after the boy. The homeless man also chases after the boy to the best of his ability. His run turns into a limp as he emerges from the alley.
As the man exits the alley, he looks up the street and sees the boy racing away, the dog trailing close behind. The man looks around and spots a cop driving slowly up the street.
The Homeless Man yells out to the cop. That chubby kid’s dog bit me!
The cop looks. He sees the boy and dog, a little over a block away. I see the boy.
The cop car pulls off to the side of the road. A moment later, the cop exits and takes off after the boy,
