    Growing up in Virginia, I was the youngest of five children and the only boy. My father took me everywhere with him. He was a huge baseball fan and took me to games all the time. My dad always encouraged me—in baseball, basketball, school, and everything else. Out of my high school and college basketball careers combined, my parents missed only two games. That kind of involvement and attention means something to you as a kid, and you don’t forget it as an adult. One day you become a parent yourself and try to be just as involved and encouraging of your own kids.

    Through athletics I experienced the support of my family. But I was also taught that family is far more important than sports. My parents gave my sisters and me what we needed most: attention and love.
