    Chapter One

Johnnie’s initial shock rapidly turned into pure rage. He couldn’t believe her audacity. Still, he had many questions that needed answering. He did not have closure, but, more importantly, he could not deny it to himself that he wanted to see her, one last time. Curious about Susan had to say to him, he quickly put any thoughts of watching a movie with Mary aside. As a matter of fact, Johnnie was so eager to meet with her that he literally jumped out of bed, adding to Mary’s curiosity.

Upon explaining to her the situation, she was a little saddened at first, but it didn’t take her long to express her desire to go with him to Manhattan. Mary maintained that she wanted to see the woman who had captured his heart. Johnnie was surprised by her request, but then allowed her to tag along. Completely clueless about Susan’s intentions, he thought that Mary would at least help him relax.

And she did. The 28-year old blonde made jokes about Susan, throughout their long drive to Manhattan. She also made fun of Johnnie a few times. Under any other circumstances, he would seriously consider reprimanding her, but he would not do so that night. Grateful for her assistance, he did not complain at all. He even laughed heartily, thereby encouraging her to continue. However, the smile was wiped off his face, as the bar that Susan had mentioned came into view. It was surrounded by other, busy bars; yet, for some reason, it was dark. The neon sign over the glass façade was off as well.

I smell a rat. Mary remarked, pulling over across from the bar. A bar, closed on a Saturday night? Who’s going to let you in, anyway?

"I have to do this." Johnnie stated, unable to take his eyes off the dark façade.

Johnnie, don’t go. She urged, putting her hand on his forearm. It could be a trap, for all we know.

Thanks for looking out for me. He spoke in a gentle tone. But she would have arrested me this morning, if she wanted to.

    Be careful. Mary whispered.

I will. Johnnie winked at her. Drawing in a deep, cleansing breath, he opened the passenger door and got out of her car. He felt the adrenaline rushing through his veins, as he crossed the street. Just before he pushed the glass door open, a light was turned on. A small light bulb has hanging on the ceiling. It was not so bright, but it allowed him to see that he was actually in one, huge room, not at all resembling a bar. There was no counter or chairs, either. Incredibly, there was just a small table, with two chairs across from each other, in the upper right corner of the bar, very close to an open door. Johnnie was about to verbalize, when the click-clacking of high heels on the hardwood floor grabbed his attention. Susan emerged from the door, with a rather serious look on her face.

    Good evening, Johnnie. She said,
