    Chapter One.

It had been five days since Kate’s flatmate Rosie had disappeared and Kate had gone beyond mere worrying and had now reached a state of sheer panic. She was beside herself but nobody else seemed willing to help. In fact, nobody else even seemed particularly worried. When she had rang Rosie’s workplace they told her that she had taken an extended leave of absence from work and that they didn’t know when she would be coming back. Her other friends had all known Rosie for longer than Kate and they said that Rosie was like that, forever vanishing on a whim and causing a big fuss only for a postcard from Morocco or Malta to turn up a week later saying that she had hooked up with some rich man and was enjoying the sun and spending his cash.

It was true, Rosie did have a wild streak and she was impulsive but to vanish without even telling her best friend and flatmate? It seemed a little too impulsive to Kate and didn’t explain why her mobile was switched off. The girl was addicted to texting. She didn’t know how to contact Rosie’s parents and the police were no use at all, just saying that she was an adult and that there was no evidence of foul play.

Kate rang their landlord and was informed not to worry, Rosie had deposited her share of the rent for three months into his bank account the day before she had left. That was, after all, hardly the act of somebody who had been abducted or hurt. It meant that she had planned to leave but it still didn’t make any sense. If she had just gone off on an impromptu holiday then why would a girl as fastidious about her appearance as Rosie leave all her clothes and make-up behind?

It just didn’t add up. There had to be another explanation. She fretted and just hoped that nothing terrible had happened to Rosie. There was only one person who might have some kind of explanation for her and that was Rosie’s boyfriend, John. Kate didn’t know his telephone number but she knew where he worked so she resolved that the next day she would go and visit him and see what light he could shed on the matter, if any at all.

Kate had disliked John from the very first time she had set eyes on him. He was handsome, successful and even charming sometimes, everything that she should want in a man for her friend. The problem was that he was too arrogant and it seemed to Kate that there was an amused darkness behind his eyes, almost as if he held everything he came up across up to examination and found it wanting, held it in contempt even, laughing at things that others would find virtuous or decent.

Rosie was the exact opposite of this, friendly and good natured, always able to put a positive spin on a situation and come up with something to make Kate laugh or smile. She had first met Katie when she had moved down to London six months before and started a new job that she had found after graduating from university. She had answered an advert for a flat share which had been placed by Rosie. They met up for a drink and she had immediately been impressed by Rosie, a sharp, pretty redhead the same age as herself. She seemed to have a confidence that Kate admired and the two were firm friends by the end of the night. She moved in the following week and in the next six months they had never so much as quarrelled once, feeling more like sisters than flatmates.

It was inconceivable to Kate that she would willingly leave without telling her. They told each other everything so she knew that Rosie must be in some kind of serious trouble. After all, she was as month to month broke as Kate was so there was no way that she would be able to pay for three months rent and then her living costs on some spur of the moment trip. Things just didn’t add up unless you brought John into the equation. He was rich enough to easily be able to afford the advance rent and for a trip away but rather than comfort Kate, the thought just made her feel worse. There was something sinister about John, after all.

After a sleep deprived night spent worrying Kate went to work and arranged to leave early. Dressed in a smart black dress she visited John’s office, a plush affair in a sparkling new signature building in central London. She waited in the reception area while a secretary took her details.

I’ll send a message over to Mr Adams but I must warn you that he is an extremely busy man, said the secretary, rather a tad too sternly thought Kate.

She thanked her and sat down to wait. After half an hour of reading a rather dry advertising journal the secretary coughed loudly.

Mr Adams has just got back to me. I’m afraid that he’s far too busy to speak to you. He says that you can call him after work.

She beckoned Kate towards her and gave her a neat and stylish business card with John’s mobile number on it.

    Thanks, said Kate, secretly irritated.

What a waste of time! At least she had his number now but the arrogant pig thought that she wasn’t important enough to spare five minutes for. It was hardly as if she was a complete stranger, after all. Still, at least there was some information that Kate could gleam from the encounter with the curt secretary. John had not left the country so Rosie couldn’t be on a all expenses paid holiday with him for next three months. But where was she? Kate started to worry about
