DAY 1

Bible reading:

GENESIS 1–2 MATTHEW 1; PSALM 1

And the LORD God said, It is not good that the man should be alone; I will make him an help meet for him.

GENESIS 2:18

This promise to one man, Adam, is also a promise to people in general—that in marriage they will find a helper that is right for them. But for everyone—even those men and women who never marry—God will provide a Helper in His Holy Spirit (John 15:26), who gives Christians the power they need to live well (Galatians 5:22–23).

DAY 2

GENESIS 3–4 MATTHEW 2; PSALM 2

And thou Bethlehem, in the land of Juda, art not the least among the princes of Juda: for out of thee shall come a Governor, that shall rule my people Israel.

MATTHEW 2:6

The Jewish leaders, in answering King Herod’s question, were quoting the prophet Micah, who predicted Jesus’ birth—and birthplace—more than seven hundred years earlier. You can be sure that when God makes a promise, He’ll keep it!

DAY 3

But thou, O LORD, art a shield for me; my glory, and the lifter up of mine head.

PSALM 3:3

Like a mother chicken, wrapping her wings around her little ones (Matthew 23:37), God protects and cares for His own. Though we still experience troubles in this world—accidents, illnesses, ultimately death—we know that God will never leave us on our own (Hebrews 13:5), and He is preparing an eternal home for us (John 14:2).

DAY 4

GENESIS 8–10; MATTHEW 4; PSALM 4

But [Jesus] answered and said, It is written, Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God.

MATTHEW 4:4

Want to find real life? It’s in the living and powerful Word of God (Hebrews 4:12). You need bread to feed your body, but the Bible gives strength to your soul and spirit. You’re now in the fourth day of a one-year diet of God’s Word—stay with it! This is where you’ll find the life worth living.

DAY 5

Now the LORD had said unto Abram, Get thee out of thy country, and from thy kindred, and from thy father’s house, unto a land that I will shew thee: And I will make of thee a great nation, and I will bless thee, and make thy name great; and thou shalt be a blessing.

GENESIS 12: 1–2

Over some four thousand years, God has proven that His promises are good. God changed Abram’s name, which means honored father, to Abraham—father of many—and Abraham is the forefather of the Jewish people. But he’s also the father of those who believe God by faith (Romans 4:16)—a great heavenly nation from among all the people of earth!

DAY 6

But I say unto you, Love your enemies, bless them that curse you, do good to them that hate you, and pray for them which despitefully use you, and persecute you; That ye may be the children of your Father which is in heaven.

MATTHEW 5:44–45

If you want to be sure you’re saved, Jesus gives a test in this verse: Are you praying for those people who treat you badly? If you are, Jesus says you’re a son (or daughter) of the heavenly Father. It’s not always easy, humanly speaking, but God has also promised that my strength is made perfect in weakness (2 Corinthians 12:9).

DAY 7

GENESIS 17–18; MATTHEW 6:1–18; PSALM 7

God judgeth the righteous.

PSALM 7:11

We live in an unfair world. The wealthy and powerful seem to work the system to their own ends, leaving the rest of us craving justice. But the psalm writer promises that God’s judgments are right and sure. Since God knows everything (1 John 3:20), He can decide who’s right, who’s wrong, and what’s best. Be faithful—and trust Him with the end result.

DAY 8

GENESIS 19–20; MATTHEW 6:19–34; PSALM 8

But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you.

MATTHEW 6:33

Sometimes life seems incomplete unless we have something to worry about. What will happen if …? What am I going to do about …? How can I afford …? In Matthew 6, Jesus offers a simple dose of reality: God feeds the birds and dresses the grass. Of course He’s going to provide for His children. So don’t worry—trust.

DAY 9

And the LORD visited Sarah as he had said, and the LORD did unto Sarah as he had spoken.

GENESIS 21:1

Crazy as it seemed, ninety-year-old Sarah was having a baby. Why? Because God had promised her husband, Abraham, that he would become the father of a great nation—and God always keeps His promises, even those that may seem impossible. Or, in God’s own words, Is any thing too hard for the LORD? (Genesis 18:14).

DAY 10

GENESIS 24; MATTHEW 7:12–29; PSALM 9:9–20

Therefore whosoever heareth these sayings of mine, and doeth them, I will liken him unto a wise man, which built his house upon a rock.

MATTHEW 7:24

God doesn’t want you to simply be a silent partner. To have a faith that’s lasting, you can’t just talk the talk … you’ve got to walk the talk. The apostle James puts it another way: But be ye doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving your own selves (James 1:22). God promises your faith will be stronger if you really live your life for Him.

DAY 11

GENESIS 25–26; MATTHEW 8:1–17; PSALM 10:1–11

That it might be fulfilled which was spoken by Esaias the prophet, saying, Himself took our infirmities, and bare our sicknesses.

MATTHEW 8:17

Sickness, the death of a loved one, the loss of a job, marital problems … As Christians, we all struggle with faith in those trying times of our lives. It’s not always easy to give up control to God. But He has promised to care for us—always. Remember that God will never forsake you (Hebrews 13:5), and hold fast to faith. If God says it, He’ll do it!

DAY 12

GENESIS 27:1–28:9; MATTHEW 8:18–34; PSALM 10:12–18

Thou hast seen it; for thou beholdest mischief and spite, to requite it with thy hand: the poor committeth himself unto thee; thou art the helper of the fatherless.

PSALM 10:14

As Creator, heavenly Father, Savior, and Lord, God is the most versatile character on the stage of life. When an important player in life—a mom, a dad, a mentor, a friend—is missing, God steps in and knows all the right lines and cues. The truth is, human relationships fail to meet expectations. A relationship with God will never fall short of the mark.

DAY 13

GENESIS 28:10–29:35; MATTHEW 9; PSALM 11

And, behold, the LORD stood above it, and said, I am the LORD God of Abraham thy father, and the God of Isaac: the land whereon thou liest, to thee will I give it, and to thy seed.

GENESIS 28:13

Ever wonder why the tiny nation of Israel—about the size and population of Massachusetts—is such a focal point for world events? Today’s verse helps to explain. God promised Jacob (later renamed Israel) that his family would always have claim to land in the Middle East. Though for centuries many have fought these chosen people (Deuteronomy 10:15), Israel’s presence proves God’s faithfulness.

DAY 14

Bible reading:

GENESIS 30:1–31:21; MATTHEW 10:1–15; PSALM 12

Thou shalt keep them, O LORD, thou shalt preserve them from this generation for ever.

PSALM 12:7

Our world is overflowing with temptations, which constantly try to lay claim to our hearts and minds. We can rejoice in knowing that our Lord and Savior has provided us with His protection and strength when our human desires threaten to take over, when our own strength just isn’t enough. He is faithful (2 Thessalonians 3:3)!

DAY 15

Bible reading:

GENESIS 31:22–32:21; MATTHEW 10:16–36; PSALM 13

Whosoever therefore shall confess me before men, him will I confess also before my Father which is in heaven.

MATTHEW 10:32

It’s a simple, give-and-take transaction. Tell others about Jesus on earth and Jesus tells His Father in heaven. Harvesting the fruit of sharing Christ with others may seem like its own reward, but Jesus offers more. Like a proud parent, He brags on His followers for an everlasting reward.

DAY 16

GENESIS 32:22–34:31; MATTHEW 10:37–11:6; PSALM 14

He that findeth his life shall lose it: and he that loseth his life for my sake shall find it.

MATTHEW 10:39

Here is a paradox—a seemingly contradictory statement. But Jesus wasn’t just playing with words. He knew that real life—life in the Spirit on earth, life forever in heaven—comes only when people surrender everything to Him. I am the way, the truth, and the life, Jesus said (John 14:6). His new life (1 Corinthians 15:22) is better than anything we could lose!

DAY 17

GENESIS 35–36; MATTHEW 11:7–24; PSALM 15

Lord, who shall abide in thy tabernacle? who shall dwell in thy holy hill? He that walketh uprightly, and worketh righteousness, and speaketh the truth in his heart.

PSALM 15:1–2

Christlike. This word brings to mind the ultimate goal of the Christian life—to be more like Jesus every day. While we’ll never be perfect because of our sinful human nature, we can strive for righteous living … taking a stand for what’s good and acceptable in God’s sight (Romans 12:2). Then we can enjoy an ever-growing, intimate relationship with Christ—for life!

DAY 18

Bible reading:

GENESIS 37–38; MATTHEW 11:25–30; PSALM 16

Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.

MATTHEW 11:28

Life has a way of dragging down, tiring out, and frustrating even the most able-bodied people. Relationships, careers, responsibilities, burdens, and unexpected troubles weigh heavily on hearts and minds, often pulling committed believers away from building a relationship with Christ. But He knows we’re busy, overworked, and tired. That’s why He promises us rest—more satisfying than the best nap ever—if we simply go to Him.

DAY 19

Bible reading:

GENESIS 39–40; MATTHEW 12:1–29; PSALM 17

Behold my servant, whom I have chosen; my beloved, in whom my soul is well pleased: I will put my spirit upon him, and he shall shew judgment to the Gentiles.

MATTHEW 12:18

Good parents give their children boundaries—a clear understanding of what should and shouldn’t be done. God did the same for everyone through Jesus. Today’s verse, a quotation from the Old Testament’s book of Isaiah (42:1), describes One who will help the world understand right and wrong. Many won’t accept Jesus’ teaching, but those of us who do can enjoy the protection of God’s perfect boundaries.

DAY 20

GENESIS 41; MATTHEW 12:30–50; PSALM 18:1–15

For whosoever shall do the will of my Father which is in heaven, the same is my brother, and sister, and mother.

MATTHEW 12:50

When we take time to walk in Jesus’ steps, we can feel closer to Him than ever before. We don’t have to earn a degree in theology or travel to a remote mission outpost to be part of Jesus’ family. Such a small gesture as giving someone a drink of cold water (Matthew 10:42)
