    Aunt Polly - Amy Shearer

    Chapter 1

Gina opened her eyes . She yawned and sat up in bed. Swinging her legs out of the bed, she switched her alarm off and got up to get ready for the day. She showered, got dressed, and fixed her makeup and hair. Then she made her way to the kitchen. Her cat, Jinx, stretched lazily from his position on the windowsill in the pale morning sunshine and she rubbed his ears gently on her way past.

He meowed and she said, I know you’re hungry. Just give me a minute. She then filled his food bowl and checked his water so he wouldn’t be underfoot while she made breakfast. That done, she proceeded to cook up some scrambled eggs, bacon, and toast, completed with a cup of coffee and her phone’s daily news feed.

While she sipped on her drink, a text notification popped up on her phone. The contact name said: Johnny with a heart emoji on either side of the name. Gina smiled warmly as she read his message. Good morning beautiful. How is my lovely fiancé this morning?

She responded, Same as usual. Just got up a bit ago. Having some breakfast now. Are you heading to the office today?

She scraped up the last bit of her eggs with a piece of toast and finished her water while she waited for his reply then put her dirtied dishes in the dishwasher. She packed a lunch, petted Jinx one more time, slipped on her shoes, and grabbed her purse as she headed out the door. Her car sat comfortably in the driveway of her small house and she threw her purse on the passenger side as she slid in. She started the car and drove to work.

As she arrived at her office, her phone pinged with a text message. She checked it after setting her bag down on her desk. Her fiancé’s response winked at her cheerily, Good. Glad to hear it. Breakfast is important. And yeah, I’ll be in a little later. Still have some paperwork to do on the Smith case. Want to do dinner tonight? My place? I’ll make spaghetti and meatballs. He sent a winky face along with the message. Gina smiled. He knew she couldn’t resist his grandmother’s spaghetti recipe. She sent back a quick response letting him know that she would definitely be over for dinner that night. Then she turned her attention to the pile of papers in her inbox tray.

The rest of Gina’s day went by like any other. She sorted the papers on her desk, filled out the appropriate sections, and sent them on to their respective account managers or to filing to be archived. Her lunch consisted of a sandwich, some veggies, and a thermos of juice to top it off. Her afternoon consisted of meetings with two potential clients and a rather long call from a very angry man who demanded to know her and her supervisor’s names. After that and a little bit more paperwork, Gina looked at her watch and sighed. Time to go home. She packed her bag and said goodbye to her remaining colleagues.

The radio played the same song that it always did when she left work. I really need to find a different station to listen to on the way home. This one is getting so predictable, Gina thought.

Traffic was the same steady crawl as everyone made the tedious trek home during rush hour. Gina gratefully pulled into her driveway forty-five minutes after leaving work. She walked inside and threw her keys in the little dish on the entryway table specifically designated for that purpose. Kicking off her shoes, she rubbed her eyes and stretched. It was good to be home.

She changed into some comfy pants and a fitted t-shirt then she went outside and retrieved her mail from the mailbox. Among the usual junk mail and bill or two, she found a large manila envelope with a legal firm’s name on the return address. It said, Law Offices of Johnson, Greene, and Smith Gina was puzzled because she didn’t know anyone at the address listed. But her name
