I have been creating stories since I was child. My parents can vouch for that. I have a super power where I can block out everyone around me so I can read books. I reside in the DC/Metro area with my awesome husband, three beautiful kids, and my witchy cat. I love to read many genres. There is soo much a book can teach one person.

    Chapter 1

    PIPPA

San Diego, California was very different than Albuquerque, New Mexico. Palm trees replaced cactuses and green detox juices replaced spicy Mexican food. Somehow I chose this place to start over and now I had to get to my barely making it job at the Jumping Bean to survive in this city.

I had trouble keeping my eyes open until I entered the backdoor of the coffee shop and the strong coffee bean aroma stirred my senses awake. I had been working at the Jumping Bean for the last few months. It was one of the easiest jobs I had ever had but they always called me in early after a long night shift.

Hey girl. Boss man make you work the late shift again? asked Jesse. She was the only person who I really liked here. She found ways to make the job fun. She flirted with customers and the staff. She had no shame and I loved her for that. She also knew fun ways to make the time go by when we were slow. One time we played bowling with cups and old muffins.

Yep, I said yawning and rubbing my eyes.

Start brewing new pots before Jim gets in. Word from Dustin is that he is just checking up on us so no need to worry about him watching over us, Jesse said flicking her black hair over her shoulder.

I threw out the old coffee and washed out the pots to begin the process of making more coffee. I made sure the floors were swept and the tables were cleaned off. I heard the chime of the door as someone came in. I couldn’t help but to look up. It was my nature to always give a smile. It was Jim. He was wearing a suit that he obviously had since he was much younger. It was  a tweed suit with patches on the elbows. He rocked a mean comb over that seemed like a joke.

Good morning Pippa. When you are done with the tables please mop the floors, he said without smiling.

I knew that this was Jim’s life, not mine. I was just waiting for a sign. I was here for the money. Making coffee was no life.  He dedicated the hours and the family time to support them with this. I had no family. I had no life. I had been on my own since I was eighteen and I liked it like that. I was now twenty-one finishing up my college degree and shared an apartment.

I was already lost in mopping the floor in the back corner when I felt something. It was like a pull on my chin to look up. The door chimed and two guys walked through the door. One of them was built with slicked back blond hair and stubble on his face. He was wearing a white t-shirt and blue jeans. Tattoos covered his arms. The other guy was leaner with dark shaggy hair. They both saw Jesse and smiled and I knew that I didn’t stand a chance against her good looks. I was  petite with thick wavy blonde hair. I watched Jesse flirt with them and they both laughed. The confidence she had was amazing. It was like watching a cat chase a laser pointer, the followed her every move.

Pippa, could you please finish the floors before the second morning rush, Jim barked.

My face heated up and I quickly looked down at the floor. I tried not to look up at them as I had just been scolded from my middle aged boss.

You know what Pippa, why don’t you and Jesse switch places since she is also having trouble concentrating this morning, Jim said loud enough for the whole shop to hear.

I glanced at Jesse who was now rolling her eyes.

We happen to walk past each other and I heard her hiss lucky bitch,

I washed my hands and came up to the counter.

So what can I get for you two? I asked. The muscular one licked his lips and ran his fingers through his hair.

We both want a strong tall black coffee, he said. I punched the order into the computer scared to look into his eyes. I knew he was trouble. I felt it before he came in.

I braved up and looked up and both guys were chatting and pointing to Jesse. My stomach sank. I knew I was not in their field.

That will be $10.78, I said.

He reached into his chain wallet and pulled out a twenty. Keep the rest for you Pippa, he said with a smile.

I couldn’t do that sir, I said handing him back his change. My fingers brushed his and I felt energy run through my fingertips.

If you won’t take this how about I take you to dinner? he said.

I don’t think I am really your type, I whispered.

Pippa, is there a problem? Jim barked around the corner.

No sir, I said grabbing two cups and a marker.

Sorry, I didn’t catch what the name for the order was, I said biting my lip.

Yeah, it’s Reid and by the way how do you know my type? he said with a wink and walked to a table with his friend.

My fingers trembled as I wrote Reid’s name on the cup. His friend was already seated and watching Jesse nonstop. Reid took a seat at the same table with him. I poured the hot coffee in the cups and before I called out his name Jesse came up to me with a huge grin.

Hey, give me that pen Pippa before Jim comes back out, she said snatching the pan out of my hand.

She frantically wrote down her name and number on a napkin for the dark haired guy. I love this job Pippa, she said with a wink. Those guys are super hot and I haven’t been out on so long.

    Reid, I called out.

I watched him walk towards me. Everything seemed to stop. It was just him raking his fingers through his hair.

    You okay? Reid asked.

It was then I realized I
