    Chapter One

Toby opened his eyes and looked up. The sky was brilliant blue with the sun directly above, the brightness forcing him to squint and turn away. He felt the ground beside him and touched soft grass. Rolling on to his front and bending his knee’s revealed their den at the back of Greyson Avenue in Wickerton, Somerset. Toby looked around but none of the others had made it.

‘Are you going to give me a hand down or what?’ came a voice from above.

Toby stretched his neck up to see Luke hanging from a large branch by his jeans.

‘You made it back OK then?’ shouted up Toby.

‘Why wouldn’t I? Your dad said it was a safe way of travelling, and I believed him’.

Toby ran around the tree and put his head inside the den.

‘What are you doing? I took the last of the beers when we left and I don’t think there are any cigarettes in there’.

‘I’m not after any of your dirty cigarettes, I want to know where the others went’ replied Toby checking all the trees.

‘All I remember was the flash of light when we were on Urkan, then waking up stuck on this bloody tree’ said Luke whose pants were becoming tighter around his backside.

Toby stopped running around and looked up at Luke, his face white.

‘I remember now. He was looking back at me from the receiver just before we got transported’.

‘Who was? Can you get me down mate; I think my testicles are going to get sliced by my pants’ said Luke shifting uncomfortably.

‘Just jump down, you’re only six feet in the air’.

‘Yeah, but you know I don’t like heights, can you not find something I can stand on?’

Toby stared at him for a moment and shook his head.

‘Like what? Do you want me to magic a mattress out of thin air for you?’

‘Well, you can make yourself move through the air, so why not?’ replied Luke, thinking it was a perfectly reasonable request.

‘Just jump down and I’ll catch you’ said Toby putting his coat on the floor.

‘You could never catch a cricket ball at school, so how you going to catch me?’

‘I won’t then and you can just land on the grass’ said Toby as he started to move away.

‘OK, sorry, come back please mate? I didn’t mean it’ said Luke apologetically.

‘Right, just hang yourself down and I will catch your legs’.

Luke edged himself down a bit and dangled his legs towards Toby’s arms.

    ‘Now let yourself go’.

Luke let go of the tree and fell on to Toby, knocking them both to the floor.

‘Thanks mate, you’re softer than the grass would be’ said Luke clambering off Toby’s back.

‘I’m glad’ said Toby rubbing his back.

‘Where is everyone else then? We all left together so we should have landed together. Hold on, did you say you saw the dark one in the receiver as we left?’ asked Luke looking more scared that he did when he was up the tree.

‘Yes. It was as if he knew where we were going, and he would be waiting for us’.

‘How would he know? Wycross told us the dark one would be vaporised in there’ replied Luke.

‘Well he clearly wasn’t and he could be here on Earth. Shit, what about dad, Sarah and Sharon? Are you sure you haven’t seen them here?’ said Toby as he checked inside the den again.

‘No, told you that I woke up stuck in this bloody tree. They must have landed close though mate’.

    Toby didn’t seem so sure.

‘Look what happened when we got sent to Urkan; we all ended up on different parts of the planet. The receiver could have sent us to different corners of Earth, and the dark one could be here too. I can’t believe this is happening again’.

Luke emerged from the den brandishing a muddied can of beer.

‘Look what I found! Can’t believe it’s still in here. You want some?’ asked Luke handing him the can.

‘Did you not hear what I just said?’

‘Yeah, something about the dark one being on Earth somewhere. I wonder if there are any cigarettes here as well’.

Toby grabbed the beer off him and threw it into the tree, causing it to explode.

‘What did you do that for you idiot?’ shouted Luke.

‘For not blooding listening to me. I just said the dark one could be here on Earth, and we don’t know where the others are, so can you take it seriously?’ snapped Toby.

‘OK, sorry, I was just excited to see a beer’.

‘Fine. Let’s head over to my house first’.

    ‘Jack? Are you there?’

Sharon put her hands in front of her and felt nothing but air. She opened her eyes but there was no light coming from anywhere.

‘Jack? Toby? Anyone?’ shouted Sharon in to the darkness.

‘Sharon? Is that you?’ came a voice from in the distance.

‘Yes! I’m here, where are you? Its pitch black in here and I can’t see a thing’.

Sharon moved slowly forward towards where the voice was coming from.

‘Stay there, I’m walking towards you’ shouted back Sharon.

‘OK, I can hear your voice getting louder so keep coming forward’.

Sharon edged her way along in the darkness with her arms outstretched.

    ‘Ow, careful!’

‘Sorry, is that Jack?’ said Sharon as she ran her hands over a bearded face.

‘Yes, it’s me’ replied Jack as he held her hands.

‘Have you any idea where we are?’

‘I presume we are on Earth somewhere, but not sure where. I’ve been calling out for a while and you are the only one that has answered. I need to find Toby, Luke and Sarah’.

Sharon grabbed hold of Jack and gave him a hug.

‘I remember us all leaving Urkan together so they can’t be far away, don’t worry’.

‘Do you not remember Toby shouting just before we got transported? He saw something in that receiver that scared him so I need to find them fast’ said Jack as he felt around for a door.

‘I remember now. I’m sure they are fine, they probably landed close by, we just need to find a way out of here’.

Jack grabbed Sharon’s hand as he edged forward with his other hand in front of him.

‘I think I saw some light this way, just watch your step’.

‘I can’t watch anything as its bloody pitch black! Just don’t let go of my hand’.

Jack felt the cold surface of a wall and kept following its path.

‘There is a wall on our right; put your hand on it Sharon and it’ll keep you steady’.

‘I’ve got it, feels damp though. I reckon we are in some underground cave system’.

‘You’re probably right. I was sure Wycross had set the receiver so that we all land together. There must have been a fault with it’ said Jack.

‘I can see daylight at the end of here Jack, keep moving’.

After ten minutes they reached the cave opening and walked out in to the sunshine.

‘God that is bright’ said Sharon rubbing her eyes.

‘It is after being stuck in there’ said Jack looking around the cave entrance.

A sheet of rock stretched above them that was cut back into shelves. There was a grassy verge at the top.

‘I know where we are. This is Underwood quarry’ said Sharon.

Jack looked up to the top and recognised the perimeter fence.

‘Look, see all those red vans over there in the corner? This is where Toby tried to commit suicide’.

Jack looked at the vans and then back up the imposing cliff face to the top.

‘I’ve failed him as a father. Even now, after finding him after all these years, I can’t keep him safe’.

Jack slumped down on the floor and put his head in his hands. Sharon knelt down and hugged him.

‘Don’t talk like that. You saved his life on Urkan, and he needs you as much as you need him. We’re going to find them, don’t worry. They must have landed near us’.

Jack nodded and kissed Sharon on the cheek.

Sharon blushed and stood up before he noticed.

‘Hey, do you reckon you could float yourself to the top of the quarry?’

‘Are you being serious? We don’t have any suits with us, so no. Toby has that skill, not me’.

‘Yes, but you may be able to do it as well if you concentrate enough. I don’t know how else we can get out of here’ said Sharon.

‘OK, I’ll try, but I can’t promise this will work’ said Jack as he stood up and closed his eyes.

‘It will, just concentrate your mind’ said Sharon as she held Jack’s arm and prayed.

    Chapter Two

    ‘Dad? Sarah?’

There was a cracking noise from upstairs, followed by a bang.

‘Sorry, that was me, your bedroom door was a bit loose’ shouted Luke down the stairs.

‘You idiot, why did you kick the door? What’s wrong with just using the handle?’

‘I tried that but it wouldn’t open’ said Luke as he jumped down the stairs.

‘There’s no sign of anyone here. The hole is still in the front door though’ said Toby looking back at what remained of the door.

‘Let’s try my place, they might have gone there’ said Luke rushing outside.

‘Hold on, we’ve been missing for a while, what if your dad’s called the police?’
