About this ebook

Bible stories from the Torah and the Gospels are sequenced and summarized in a picture book for all ages. More than 4000 years ago a message about the kingdom of God was introduced through the Hebrew people.  More than 2000 years later the concept of the kingdom of God shifted due to the teachings of Jesus in the first century CE.  This book shows how thoroughly grounded in Jewish traditions the Judeo Christian communities originally were.  Additional information from contemporary studies clarify biblical texts using a discovery-oriented approach. Questions reframe the idea of where a seeker might find God.  Is the kingdom of God a place or a state of mind?

Burning Bushes Everywhere - Guinevere Grier

Have you ever met someone whose life

makes no sense at all if God does not exist?

Question: Did you ever wonder what it would be like

if every person you met wanted what was best for you?

The Bible is where the question is both asked and answered.

The Torah contains stories first told, then written on scrolls,

then copied on parchment, later printed on paper,

and now digitally formatted for electronic retrieval.

    The Gospels contain stories remembered

after a Hebrew baby named Yeshua, or Jesus,

    was born, lived, and died.

From the Gospels, we learn how his understanding

of the kingdom of God transforms lives and changes the world.

This is a book about the kingdom of God, and

about the God who was, is, and will be.

    Real or make believe?

Decide based on what you might learn. §

    Preface

Dear Reader: If you live on this planet there are some things you know. You can count on the sun providing energy for plants to grow. You can count on birds singing, fish swimming, children playing, people texting. Can you count on God? The last question you may wonder about. That is why I wrote this book. It is a book about understanding stories in the Bible. Not that many people actually read the Bible. Some people read it often. Parts of it are read aloud in churches and synagogues. Not everyone goes to churches and synagogues. Some people who trust God loves them go to church. Some people who love God do not. Some people who attend think they are better than other people. Some people don’t think there is a God and think those who do should not. Some people think maybe there is, and maybe there isn’t. Some people wonder how some of the awful things that happen in the world could possibly happen if there is a God. There are people who talk about God but don’t act in the way people who love God would act. And there are people who have had experiences which have left them thinking they don’t want to have anything to do with God or with any church. Ever. There are also people who have no doubts at all.

There are times when rabbis or priests or pastors offer classes to prepare those who attend to make a commitment to God, to their community, and to the world. Bar mitzvah, bat mitzvah, and confirmation provide a ritual for coming of age. Adults are also provided this opportunity. Mostly those classes cover church history and traditions. Those teachings are best left to the authorities of a denomination or tradition. These are for anyone and everyone whether they know about God or not, whether they go to church or not, whether they are young or old.

It is easier to understand Bible stories when information about the time when the Bible stories were told is given. It is also easier to understand when information that you learn in school is given. Many of the stories are familiar even though Bible stories are not talked about in some schools. In some countries church and state are separated. In some they are not. No matter whether you ever attend a church or synagogue or participate in any ritual or ceremony, knowing the message the Bible provides will help you understand people. Asking questions and finding answers is what they do: Where is the kingdom of God? That is the question this book tries to answer by choosing a few selections from the Bible. Thank you for reading.
