THE CRY OF A BABY
James sat on the sofa in his living room looking impassively up at the whirling fan. The peculiar krom krom krom sound the fan made as its hub grazed the little cup above it filled him with a sort of fascination——a fascination born out of the desperate need to snap out of the many worries niggling him.
Somewhere in the house, a female voice was singing nonchallantly away. It was his wife, Leelabari, crooning as she ran the vacuum. He listened with a mixture of pride and dismay as she warbled her way through the AMAZING GRACE song.
He couldn’t begin to understand women. To them, it seemed feelings were clothes one donned and discarded at one’s whims. For how could you begin to understand the happy crooning of a woman who after ten sodding years had failed to prove her worthH Ten years——ten frigging years—— and you’d think some drops of that amazing grace that she so passionately sang about would have spattered on them.
NoH their childlessness would no longer be a thing to sweep under the carpet as she so wanted it to be. They needed to confront this
issue head on. The problem was ‘head on’ was a difficult concept to define. Particularly when you considered the many churches they’d had to visit for a solution.
Churches were not enough, he decided as he propped his sneakered feet on the centre table, he needed to up his ante.
At the office........
Later that afternoon at work, as he sat in his little compartment trying to sort out a little paperwork, he couldn’t concentrate. His stomach lurched and his vision was blurry. The ’childlessness’ problem was taking its toll on him.
He stretched extravagantly in his swivel chair and eased his tie a bit. Seeing a seer was out of the question. He knew Leelabari would never approve of it.
Yet.
He checked his watch. It was twelve noon. Lunch-break.
