    Lebari is a young missionary in the colonial community of Saate. When a wave of inexplicable events forces the community people to reject the new religion, Lebari refuses to elope with the other missionaries. He is attacked by a mob and made to face trial but he stubbornly clings to his new faith, even down to his grave.
