––––––––
Dear Authors, Friends, and Friendly Strangers,
I’ve been called the Blurb Queen, but I’m more like the Court Jester, wielding words with wit, wisdom, and weirdness where appropriate. In any case, I’m also a teacher, so I’m going to define blurbs and show you my process. Next, I’ll lay out the 10 principles that lie behind strong blurbs and 5 common mistakes many people make. After that, I’ll go through some case studies and provide a few exercises to help make your book descriptions stronger. Practice doesn’t always make perfect, but it does lead to improvement. Finally, I will make the case for seeking outside opinions.
If you want more case studies, free tips, and other perks like discounted blurb rewrites, join the Book Blurb Club on Facebook.
I look forward to working with you, whether solely through this book or directly on your current blurb. Keep on writing. It makes the world wonderful.
Sincerely,
Julie C. Gilbert

Chapter 1:
Blurb Form, Function, and Fashion
Dear Reader,
You may be wondering ...
What is a blurb? (Back Cover Copy/Book Description)
It sounds like something that went wrong in my chemistry class, but in reality, a blurb is the description of a book, movie, or other item. For our purposes, I’m going to confine this definition to books. It goes by several names, but for simplicity, I’m going to stick with blurb. The blurb is meant to draw the customer in, let them know what the book’s about, and entice them to go hit that Add to Cart
button.
How does a blurb differ from a synopsis or an agent query?
Odds are good that if you continue writing, you’ll be crafting one or both of those later. How to write each of these tools is a bit beyond the scope of this book, but I want to point out that the principles you learn here will sharpen the type of writing applied in these tools as well.
Quick definitions:
Synopsis: The 1-2 page short form of your book. It introduces each major player and follows the story’s twists and turns. 1-2 pages isn’t a lot of space when it comes to taking an 80,000-word novel and distilling it down to pertinent plot points and key characters. Choosing the significant pieces of your story for a blurb will help you identify them for the synopsis as well. Presentation is going to differ, but if you can pare down for a blurb, you can definitely do the same for a synopsis.
Agent query: This is a letter you draft to attract a literary agent. There are giant tomes that detail the how to
aspect of this particular art form, but understand that although much of it can be a form letter, every agent wants something slightly different in their submission packets. You’ll simply have to do the legwork and find out what the agent you’re after wishes then go way out of your way to give them everything exactly as they want.
Are blurbs different in fiction and nonfiction?
Short answer: Yes.
Long answer: I deal with more fiction blurbs than nonfiction ones. Their purpose is the same: to attract buyers. That said, I find non-fiction blurbs higher on selling points
and lower on pretty prose. Part of the attraction of a non-fiction work lies in the functionality of the work. In other words, what can this book teach me about something I already want to know? With fiction, you have roughly 150-250 words to catch a reader’s attention. Let’s face it, people, attention spans are shrinking at an alarming rate.
What does a great blurb do?
A great blurb grabs a reader’s attention and holds it until your entire pitch has been delivered. It should leave them with an I want more!
gut feeling that can only be assuaged by reading on.
Why do you need to know how to write a blurb?
Your cover should do the heavy lifting of first snagging a reader’s attention, but the blurb must then deliver a concise reason as to why that reader should buy your book. You need to let the reader know what they’re in for. Odds are good that if you continue with your writing career, you’ll need to write some blurbs.
Bonus: Blurbs can be adapted for social media use. Once you’ve stripped your novel down to its nuts and bolts, modifying the beast to give it Facebook or Twitter legs should be easy.
