Aalia's Awakening (Dragonbonds, #1)

Prologue

The earth was ravaged by wars, disease, and weather, unlike anyone has ever seen. It lasted from 2017 all the way through to 2035. By the end, many had forgotten why it started. Many orphaned children were left behind, as a result, there were many orphanages opened up in each country, to help with the large flow of orphans.

15 July 2035. Aalia was dropped at the Western Australian orphanage by an unknown man, she was only 4 months old. Her entire possessions consisted of a pink blanket with the monogram A.A.A., a dragon-shaped pendant with blue sapphire eyes, and a raw, uncut blue stone, held in its claw, and a letter saying the following:

Please take good care of my little Aalia. If things go as planned I will return to get her before her 10th birthday. If I fail to return can you please ensure that she receives everything that she was dropped off with, as they will give her some comfort knowing that her parents loved her enough to keep her safe within your walls.

Aalia was fortunate that she was left at this particular orphanage. The couple that managed it, took care of every child as if they were their own. They also ensured they knew everything they needed to, about how they arrived, and what they had with them.

Daily, she waited, hoping each one was 'The day'. The day she went back with her family.

Aalia made many friends in the orphanage, but Ulyanna was the one she was the closest to. On her 10th birthday no one showed up for her, this caused her to spiral deep into depression. Throughout the years, she pushed away everyone, except for Ulyanna, who refused to let her and stuck by her, no matter what.

Anna, we got the job, both of us. We start next week, Aalia said, jumping with excitement.

Oh my god, I can’t believe we did it. That means we can celebrate your 16th with style.

And yours too, in a couple of months. Plus, we can move out then too. Aalia said.

Ulyanna was Aalia’s best friend, they were inseparable. She had long black hair that always seemed to be tame, unlike Aalia's that was mid-length, pale gray hair with light blue, tones. Aalia's eyes were a sapphire blue, Ulyanna's were steel gray and they draw you in, making you feel safe when you look into them. Just like Aalia, she could eat anything she wanted and it never upset her perfect figure.

Both girls saved and on Ulyanna’s 16th birthday, they rented their own house, on the edge of the city. It was small and had that minimalist look, but they didn't care because it was their home.

A few months after they moved in, Aalia started to notice some changes. Ulyanna took her to the doctors, but they found nothing out of the ordinary. Her eyesight became slightly heightened along with her hearing. She was able to hear conversations four houses down. With practice, they managed to extend it to six houses away. Sometimes it felt like a curse, hearing people talk about you, whilst in another room, was rather daunting. But sometimes it was quite funny too.

Aalia also found herself drawn to Ulyanna, in more than a friendship way. She found herself watching her when she was doing things. Even small things like the way her hair swished over her back as she moved, small dimples on her cheeks when she smiled, even the glimmer in her eyes when she was feeling happy or proud. Her small tell-tale signs of when she was sad, disappointed or hurt as well, became more apparent. Neither of the girls had ever been in a relationship before and up until now, Aalia hadn't even thought about it.

On her 18th birthday, Ulyanna took her out for dinner and a movie. Their mood was dampened though when they returned. Someone had been in their home. Nothing was taken, but things were thrown around as if someone was looking for something.

That night Ulyanna came into her room, Lia, I'm feeling a bit scared. Can I sleep in your bed tonight? I will feel a lot safer.

Aalia felt oddly excited at the idea. Sure, there is plenty of room.

Just as Aalia was about to drift off to sleep, she heard Ulyanna crying.

Anna,  it will be ok. The police said it was probably just some low life looking for something to steal.

I know but I can't help thinking, what would have happened if we were here?

Luckily we weren't and now they know there is nothing here, I'm sure they won't return,  Aalia held out her arms. Come here, we are safe and both of us need sleep. I will hold you until you sleep if you like.

Ulyanna moved over, into Aalia’s arms, Thank-you.

Ulyanna finally drifted off into a peaceful sleep. Aalia couldn't help but keep a hold of her. She could see her beautiful face in the dappled moonlight that shone through the window. She wanted so badly to run her fingers over her lips, and gently, stroke her cheek. A lock of her shiny, black hair fell over her face, and she couldn't help but put it back into place. Even asleep, she didn't have that messed up, bed hair. It always amazed her how she never needed to tame it like most girls. She drifted into a deep sleep, still holding Ulyanna in her arms.

Aalia entered into a dreamland, there was a narrow concrete pathway, that was black on each side. With only the one option available, she started to walk, following the pathway, with caution. Slowly the pathway turned into a lush green path, with straight, close together, pine trees, lining the edges. When she took her first step onto the grass, she realized, her shoes had disappeared, and she could feel the soft, spongy grass under her feet. She also noticed her night clothes had turned into a lightweight sun dress, in a lovely pastel blue.

After following the pathway for a while, it gradually opened out to reveal the clearest, lake she has ever seen. The top sparkled as if it was made of diamonds. When she got  a few steps of the edge of the water, the dress morphed into a comfy bikini, in the same shade of blue that the dress was.

She lied down on the water's edge, feeling the cool, soft grass under her body. The grass was so green and lush, she couldn’t help but run her hands over it, feeling the blades tickle between her fingers. Closing her eyes she enjoyed the sensations of soft grass, warm dappled, sunlight and the quiet, tranquil sound of nothing but a faint breeze and the smell of grass mixed with the fresh water.

Aalia felt like she was in her own personal heaven, but she soon discovered she was not alone. Someone emerged from the water, wearing nothing but a smoke gray bikini. It only took a split second for her to realize it was Ulyanna. She bounded over, flicking droplets of water over her.

Lia, how did you get here? Ulyanna asked, sporting a beautiful smile.

Returning the smile Aalia said, The usual way you enter a dream, I fell asleep.

Lying down next to Aalia, Ulyanna said, This place is amazing, I come here quite often. This is my safe, happy place.

Aalia couldn’t help noticing the beautiful firm mounds of Ulyanna's breast, peeking out from the bikini top. She wanted to run her fingers over them, and trace the lines of the curves. Ulyanna caught her looking.

Giggling, she asked, Join me in the water it's just the right temperature, and super clear.

Sure, why not, Aalia replied and they both slipped into the water.

After what felt like an hour of playing in the water, dunking and splashing each other, they got out and reclined in the warm sun. Laying back Aalia closed her eyes and let the sun warm her skin, and dry off the water droplets. Suddenly she felt something on her stomach. Opening her eyes revealed Ulyanna was licking water drops off her, with a cheeky smile on her face.

I couldn't help it, she said grinning it looked so tasty

Initially, she was shocked but also pleased, she realized it was a dream, so she gave in and went with the flow. After all, it wasn't the first dream of this nature that Ulyanna was in.

Reaching over she put her finger under Ulyanna's chin, slowly guiding her face up to meet her own. Licking her lips and gently moving her face so that their lips gently touched. There was no protest so she deepened the kiss, her fingers found, and played with, her hair. Ulyanna pulled back a little, with a cheeky smile on her face, then lowered her lips over the top of Aalia's breast.
