    Blind Love By Mavis Francis

Deep in San Fernando Valley no one foretell that trouble was about to take place, not even this blind girl Ashley Kelly who was about to get involve in a dangerous mission that would put herself and her family into danger. It happen one hot summer night with just a slight cool breeze coming through her half open window, and the sounds of the ocean could be heard above the stillness of the night. It was about eight-thirty P.M in the middle of July on a very hot Sunday night. Ashley Kelly was restless in bed because of the heat. She got up and feeling her way over to the window she stood there for a moment. Although she couldn’t see, she could feel the brightness of the moon on her face. She wondered if there were any stars in the sky. Ashley decided to go for a walk to cool herself down. She called her dog Lucky to her side. As she pulled on her sneakers, she then picked up the harness at the foot of the bed where she always left it, and put her hand out to touch Lucky’s collar, she put it around his neck. while telling him they were going for a walk on the beach.

She let herself out the back door, and stood for a moment breathing in the cool breeze into her lungs, before closing the door behind her, and following Lucky’s lead she began too walked slowly down the steps until her feet touch the ground. Ashley could feel the cool breeze on her sweaty body. At the same time she turned her face towards the sea in an effort to smell the salty air. Ashley was enjoying her walk that she didn’t realizing how far she had walk away from the house. The night was still as Lucky let out a loud growled warning her she had gone to far. She turned to walk back to the house, when out of the darkness she thought she heard a voice. She got the feeling something was wrong and she wasn’t alone, even before Lucky began barking sending out a warning. She stopped and listened, as she tried to silence the dog. Ashley began to get scared she listened for sounds, Then from no where she heard a voice calling out for help. It was coming not to far from where she was standing on her left side. She called out, Is someone there? Who are you? What do you want? Steve who had doze off from the pain when he twist his ankle woke up when he heard the dog barking. He didn’t answer right away. So she turned to continue her walk, when she heard, Help me please, help me. I won’t hurt you, I’m hurt. Who are you? she said in a scared voice. I’m a police officer, I promise I wouldn’t hurt. Please help me I’m hurt. I’m sorry if I scared you. Steve replied.

Show me your badge, she said. And keep talking I’ll follow the sound of your voice, she said, turning against towards the voice. Steve kept talking as he took his badge from his pocket and stretched his hand towards her. Fetch’ Lucky; fetch boy, she said to Lucky. Steve was saying just about anything that came into his head. He talked until he felt a shiny, sleek dog who nearly fell over him. Steve put his badge in Lucky’s mouth and watch the dog walked back to his mistress. Ashley took the badge from Lucky’s mouth and ran her fingers over it and said. What’s your name officer, she asked. And what’re you doing here on the beach? not waiting for his answer she said. Alright officer I’ll help you. What wrong with you? Steve was lying in a ditch on the beach. I twist my ankle I don’t think I could walk. It might be broken, and my is Steve Lowe, and what’s your name? Steve asked her. Ashley’ and this my dog Lucky, she answered. believing him she agreed too help him. Talking to Lucky she instructed him to take her to Steve. She reached Steve and stretching out her hand until she touched. She offered her shoulder to lean on and told him that her home was not very far away. Lucky will guard us if you’re able to walk. I don’t think so, but I’ll try. Steve pushed himself up and using her arm. He tried to stand, but the pain was too much for him. He grind his teeth and bit down hard on his lip. Are you alright? she asked him. Steve moan a little and said. Yes It took them a while to get to the house because they had to go very slow. Steve weight on her shoulder was heavy Making it harder for them to walk fast, each step they took. They had to stop with her hand on Lucky who silently led the way. When they got to the house, with the back light shining on the porch and there was five steps to climb. She let go of Steve tell him to hold on to the rail while she open the door. Ashley opened the door wide and went back to assist him. She helped Steve through the kitchen into the living room, and unto the couch, telling him she would right back. She stepped away from him to go and fetch the first aide kit, when she felt his hand on her arm. She turned around very slowly to face him. Steve stared at her face, letting out a loud groan when he realized she was blind. Not knowing what was going on in Steve mind. She asked him whether he was in pain, Steve didn’t answer right away but when he did, he said. No. He asked her whether she was blind, which she answered with a quick. Yes." She then excused herself to go to the bathroom to get a first aid kit to bandage his ankle. Steve said nothing more but watched her until she was out off sight. He looked down at Lucky and smiled, then began to focused his eyes around the room. Everything was out off reach and in a circle making it easy for her to walk, but the room was beautiful decorated. It was an attractive living room. Steve heard her coming back and waited until she reached his side, too make conversation he complimented her on her lovely home. She explained that her parents were responsible for the décor. As she bandage the ankle, Too change the subject she inquired as what had happened and why he was on the beach that hour off the night.

Steve was very evasive and had no intention of telling Ashley that he was an undercover cop working on a very important case. He was very appreciated, but didn’t want getting her involved. With her helping him, he knew it mighty be putting her in danger, not knowing whether Jim and the other was waiting for him on the street, but he did admired her beautiful, her dark skin, and long black, curly hair. In his mind he couldn’t help thinking that she was the most beautiful woman he had ever seen. Her lips looked soft and inviting, her hands felt soft and gently on his skin, he even notice that she kept her body in great shape, and wondered in she frequented the gym.

Ashley was thinking why he hesitated when she questioned him about his where about on the beach so late at night. After a lengthy pause, Steve found himself opening to up to a stranger. She finished bandaging his ankle, and appeared to be genuinely concerned, so he told her the truth, that he was a detective working on a kidnapping case, but left out that he just witness a cold bloody murder. He thought that was enough information he was going to give her, and warned her with she helping him he could put her in danger if he said anymore, and he couldn’t bear that on his conscience. She decided to drop the subject and offered him something to drink. He said he would love a glass of brandy to help ease the pain. Ashley step away from him and feel her way to the liquor cabinet passing her hands over each bottle until she came upon the one she wanted. The clock chimed, making Steve glance up at it; he hadn’t realized it was so close to midnight. He apologies for imposing on her, which she anxiously waved off and told him she couldn’t sleep anyway that’s why she was walking on the beach, then further told him he could sleep on the couch for the night, pointed to the direction of the bathroom, and then wished him goodnight. Jokingly, she added, Don’t try anything funny or my dog Lucky will tear you to shreds. Steve laughed as he watched her walk lazily off to her bedroom.

Ashley laid in bed thinking about the stranger on her couch, and wondered what he looked like, and whether he was married or single, she try to remember the conversation they had early when he said something about putting her in danger although the night air was hot she felt a cold chill run through her body, and down her spines. She asked herself if she had done the right thing helping the stranger, and bringing him into her home, she try to shake the feeling away by closing her eyes and clearing her mind that she did the right thing. She fell into a deep sleep. Meanwhile in the living Steve lift his bad leg on the couch as he drink the brandy with a worry look on his face thinking it was to late for him to call his captain, and report to him about what he had witnessed earlier. He drain the glass, and put it down on the side table and closing his eyes he let his mind drifted back to the pass couple off weeks.

His captain had asked him and two other detective. John and Tim, to come into his office he wanted to speak to them and asked them to closed the door and have a seat. With an intense look on his face, he explained that the mayor had requested his help in an important investigation. Apparently, leading scientists had been kidnapped from the country and it was imperative that they were found. After the plan was laid out he told them that the next morning they would begin their undercover operation. First, they would be trained for two weeks at a secret base before beginning the assignment.

The next morning they’ll arrived at the captain office, where they proceeded to follow him to the basement of the building where they were escorted into a waiting van with everyone holding their silence. The driver of the van drove for about an hour then stopped in front of a tall, glass building, where for the first time the captain asked them to get out, and follow him. Inside the building, where they were greeted by two men. They introduced themselves as Ken and Jeff, there trainers for the next two weeks. The captain departed, assuring them that they were in good hands and he would see them after their training session was over. The first week, everything well. The second week after going through some tough training they were given a few hours break and told to be back at base by six in the evening. Everyone was back before six except John. It was past seven and he still hadn’t shown up. They’ll began getting worried until the captain call and informed them that they found John dead in his apartment. After breaking the bad news to them the Captain Paul hang up. He remembered getting very emotional as tears streamed down face. He couldn’t believe what he had just heard, his best and close friend have died from a drug overdose? It just doesn’t make any sense. The two of them met in high school, they even joined the police academy together. John never used drugs, he was allergic to certain type of drugs. After talking over the news with the other, he got up and walked out the building without another word. He wondered who would want to kill John, and why? These thought he kept to himself. He had to get to the bottom of this, but knew he had to be careful, who ever was responsible for his death had to be after something not knowing exactly what it was or why he knew couldn’t trust anyone. The news hit him hard and he wanted answers. Steve remembered rushing into the captain’s office demanding answers but something stop him. He try to recall the conversation he had with John just a few days ago Something John had mentioned about Tim, it suddenly came back to him. "Why was Tim chosen for this assignment? The mayor had requested the three top men in the department, and Tim was nowhere near that title. Before he could asked the captain any questions an idea suddenly came to him, excusing himself from the captain office, and getting into his car he drove directly to John’s apartment. When he got to the apartment, it was apparent that someone had been there before him the door had been broken into.

The place was a total mess. He hoped whoever and whatever they were looking for they didn’t find it. He rushed to the hidden hole in the wall camouflaged by the air-conditioning unit.

Steve grabbed the envelope containing John’s important documents and stuffed them inside his shirt, something told him he had to be careful, that maybe he also might be in danger. He was about to leave the apartment when he decided to change his mind and remain, thinking it was best if he stayed in John’s apartment, just in case someone was keeping an eye on the place, or the intruder decided to come back.

He must have fallen asleep, because he was awaken by a banging noise, from where he was he peep through the curtains and saw two men trying to break the front door down. He didn’t recognize their faces, but thought he wasn’t going to stick around to introduce himself, he got what he went there for. He made his escaped down the fire escape and contemplated his next move.

He thought before going to see the captain he better look over John’s reports. He anxiously looking through the papers and was shocked by his discovery. The next day late in the afternoon. Steve waited outside the building where they were training to see if Tim would show up. He didn’t have long to wait. From across the street, he saw Tim enter the building, then come back out right away. Steve gave him a couple of minutes, then started following him, making sure he kept out of sight, for about four blocks before Tim disappeared into an abandoned building. Just as Steve was about to cross the street. Tim came out accompanied by a man, who was helping him drag a third man. They got into a car and drove off to the direction of the beach. Steve rushed to his car which was parked not to far from where he was hiding. He began following them but keeping a distance. Cutting his light off when he saw them stopped the car and got out pulled up the man. He observed their every move as he to parked his car trying not to get to close. He got out his car and ran across the sand until he reaches a tree and dock behind it still keeping his eyes of the three figures, then he notice Tim took out a gun from his hip, and shot the guy in his head. At that very moment, Steve felt something brushed against his arm, and in attempt to brush it off, he made a noise causing the men to look at the direction where he was hiding, his only thought was to get the hell out off there before they spotted him. He tried to run but his foot got caught between a rock he fell twisting his ankle. The only thing he could do was to lay flat down onto his stomach and prayed that they wouldn’t come towards him. He could hear their footstep coming closer to where he was they were talking among themselves, then they stop and turned around and left the scene. He waited a few minutes, then crawled his way unto the beach, and in a hole where Ashley found him.

The next day was Monday Ashley woke up, she called out to Lucky as she opened her bedroom door hearing the dog bark. She called out to Steve, but there was no answer. She called out again, and this time the dog came rushing towards her. She felt the paper jutting out his mouth, but didn’t know what it was.

Then there was a sudden knock on the door, and Steve called out to Ashley. Who recognizing his voice she made her way to the door and answer. Steve step inside. Limping and grimacing, as he made his was back to the couch. He was still in pain, and she asked him if he was okay. He told her that he hadn’t gotten far when he remembered that she wouldn’t be unable to read his note. So he turned around because he couldn’t leave without explaining why, and he was in too much pain to continue to where he had left his car. He asked if he could use her phone to call taxi. He was about to do so when the uninvited guests broke in. Tim and his partner had waited all night Tim who recognized Steve car parked at the beach said to Mark. You was right when you said you heard a noise. and Mark said to him I knew some one was there hiding, and he saw everything; now we can’t let him live. He’ll ruin the whole plan. We better go and get him. Tim realize their only change to catch Steve off guard was for them to stake out his car. Tim knew one way or another he had to come and get it. It was seven thirty A.M when they finally spotted Steve hopping down the quiet street towards them. Tim and his partner Mark waited for Steve to pass them, but he didn’t instead Steve stopped and double back he was headed to the direction he came from. They was to far away to jump him so they patiently waited for the right moment. Before they got out their car and hurried after him but tried to stay a distance. They began to follow him. When they saw Steve entered the house, they hurried after him hoping they could reach him before the door closed, but it was to late Steve entered the house closing the door behind him. Steve and Ashley was taken by surprise when the both heard a loud noise. Steve swung around as the door hit the floor with Tim and Mark rushing in.

Steve was caught unawares, but instinct made him push Ashley behind him. Lucky was growling at the two intruders, but the men had guns, afraid for the dog life Steve told her to be quiet him. Steve put his hands up pleaded with the men not to do anything foolish, and begged them to spare the girl’s life. She can’t recognized them, he explained, but they were unconcerned with his pleas. Lucky, sensing danger, unexpectedly lunged at one of the stranger’s throat and knocked him off his feet, giving Steve the opportunity to throw himself at the shocked Tim. A struggle took place. Steve ended up with the gun, and pointing it at the men while Lucky was still holding on to the man’s leg in his mouth. He looked at his mistress and noticed that she was scared, and shaken, the stranger broke free of the dog and raced outside. Tim suddenly pushed Steve backward, and he too raced out the house, with Lucky barking loudly after them.

Ashley called out to the dog with her hands stretched out. Lucky ran to her side licking her cheek. Steve went to her assuring her everything was okay. Her whole body was shaking with fear. She suddenly broke down in tears. Steve pulled her towards him, realizing how frighten she was. He told she couldn’t stay in the house since it wasn’t safe, she explained to him that she was a first-grade schoolteacher for blind kids, and asked him to dial the number of the school for her because she was running late. Ashley took the phone from him and putting it to her ear. She explained to the principal’s secretary that she hadn’t slept well the night before, and she wouldn’t be showing up for work that morning. She handed the phone to Steve and said. I’m fine how, come Lucky let’s go to the kitchen. then said to Steve. Are you hungry? I’ll fixed us some breakfast. and made her way to the kitchen. Steve waited until she left the room before picking up the door and try to put it back fix it. He knew it all his doing leading the men to her house and putting her in danger. When he finish fix the door and check to make sure all the doors were locked, Steve sauntered into the brightly lit kitchen. The smell of fresh coffee filled the room, and he was shocked to discover how independent this beautiful blind woman actually was. Ashley sat at the table with a mug in her hands. Another mug sat on the table opposite her. She smiled when she heard him enter the room trying to put on a brave face.

Are we all secure? she asked and saluted him with a comic gesture.

Steve sat down and laughed. We sure are, ma ma he said as he scooped some sugar from the porcelain sugar bowl in the middle of the table into his coffee.

Ashley reached down to patted Lucky’s golden coat and said. Steve who are those men? And what do they want with you to break down my door and try to kill you? she asked in a serious voice, still rubbing Lucky’s head who was resting comfortable by her feet. I’m very sorry for putting you in such dander, but you took it very well. You must be one great guy, Lucky seems to like you, Ashley said

Steve admired her beautiful smile as she seemed to stare past him. Even without makeup and just after waking up she was very attractive. Her hair was pleasantly rumpled, and her smile was contagious.

So, he said as he sipped the hot strong coffee, Do you make it a habit to help strange men In distress? She giggled and nearly spilled her coffee, but Steve helped her set it firmly on the table. Ashley smiled, and told him a little bit about herself and her family. He discovered that she had a younger brother, and that she was bi-racial.

She reached across the table to let Steve know that she wanted to touched his hand. He took her hands in his. They felt so small and soft that he had an
