    ––––––––

    Previously:

Rachel lives with her boyfriend, Dan: an arrogant pig of a man who treats her badly, verbally abuses her and has beaten her so far down that she’s convinced she’s not worthy of anyone else.

That all changes on the night of her birthday, when Dan breaks up with her, and she meets Chase—a handsome suited stranger with a sexy English accent. Chase convinces her to sing in the local karaoke competition, something she’s always wanted to do but has been too scared to try. Afterward, euphoric with the rush of performing in public, she agrees to have dinner with Chase.

Over dinner, birthday cake and wine, the two discover they have a mutual fascination with music. Chase invites her back to his brownstone manor on Central Park, and to the sound of an old Judy Garland LP, they make love.

It is with Chase that Rachel, for the first time, feels like a real woman. He respects her, and appreciates her, and loves her curves. They connect on a spiritual and physical level, and Rachel returns home the next morning happier than she’s been in many, many years.

But the smile falls from her face though when she walks in the front door. Because Dan is sitting on her couch, and he can’t remember the previous night. And if he can’t remember it, did they really break up?

    Chapter 1

"Hey, you seen my blue tie?"

I popped my head round the bathroom door, still rubbing a towel through wet, red hair. Sorry, what was that?

What, are you deaf now, too? Dan asked, fishing a tie with azure polka dots out from under a pile of clothing. He threw it in the suitcase sitting atop our bed.

I shook my head, then went back to the bathroom. You’d think nobody ever went on a weekend trip before. He’s the first, and God forbid he has to find his own things.

Then I frowned into the mirror. And did he say too? What was that supposed to mean? I closed my eyes, pinching the bridge of my nose, then picked up my hairdryer. I only had myself to blame.

For the hundredth time since returning to the apartment two weeks ago to find him sitting in his underwear, eating a bowl of cereal, I wondered why I hadn’t just kicked him out. After all, he’d ended our relationship that night before—did it make a difference that he’d been too drunk to remember? Why had I crumbled when I’d walked in and seen him? Had it been guilt? Or fear?

It was neither, I decided. It was stupidity. I stared into my own eyes in the mirror. What’s wrong with you?

What’s wrong with you? I was startled out of my thoughts by Dan’s presence behind me.

    What?

You’re standing there like a zombie. You’re gonna burn your hair off.

I hadn’t realized I’d zoned out, the dryer focused on a single section of my hair. My ear was starting to hurt from the hot air.

I guess I’m... just worried about you being gone all weekend, l lied. Dan going away
