    Book 3: First Date

    Previously:

Claire works for a major pharmaceutical company, and had been resigned to the fact that she’d never be with a man until she meets her Billionaire boss, Austin Douglas. When they are locked together for the night in her lab, romance quickly blossoms. When they both leave in the morning, Claire is no longer a virgin.

But then Claire finds a folder containing secret documents. Austin is selling out the company, closing all operations in America and moving everything to Japan. The news is devastating. Was he just using her? Was everything he said just a lie to get her into bed?

Hurt and upset, she composes an email to a local newspaper. But she confronts him before sending it, and discovers that there is more to the issue than she initially believed—the US government intends to weaponize her research. Moving the company offshore is the only way to keep it safe. Austin and Claire kiss and make up on his boardroom table. And then in the chair. And then up against a wall. Over and over again.

Book two concludes several days later. Claire is still dreaming about her encounters with Austin when she picks up her phone. Her best friend is on the other end of the line, and she’s hysterical—word of the company’s closure has just leaked to the press. And Claire suspects she might have been the one who did it....

    Chapter 1

"You are such an idiot! Such a big, fat, stupid idiot! I yelled at myself. I felt like slamming my head into a brick wall.  It wasn’t enough to find the man of your dreams, was it? Oh no. You had to get in there and screw it all up."

I would have added ‘just like last time’ at the end, but there hadn’t ever been a last time. Austin was my first. And after what I’d done, my last—I couldn’t imagine anyone ever wanting me again, after the way I’d betrayed him.

I looked at the headline again.

    BILLIONAIRE BUSINESSMAN BETRAYS EMPLOYEES

And underneath it, a subheading: America’s largest pharmaceutical company moves to Japan.

Me and my sausage fingers. I knew how it had happened.

I’d drafted the email, but never sent it—I had left it sitting open on my computer when I’d gone to confront Austin. When I’d come back to the lab after making love to him, I’d been on such a high; floating on cloud nine and eager to get home after our lovemaking session in the boardroom. And so I’d just clicked yes to everything when I shut my computer down:

‘You have three unopened programs, do you want to shut them down?’ YES.

‘You have two unsaved Word documents, do you want to save them?’ YES.

‘You have one unsent email, do you want to send it?’ YES

I hadn’t even thought about it at the time—such a simple action, the sort I did every day without thinking. But by the time I’d arrived home and poured myself a glass of wine, the damage had already been done.

I should have trusted Austin, not leapt to conclusions. I should have paid more attention to what I was doing when I powered down for the day. But it was all too late for that now, wasn’t it? I just wanted to crawl under a table and die. I’d ruined everything.

Mel had been in hysterics when she’d phoned me. I couldn’t blame her. On the surface, it looked bad—Austin was shutting down all of the company’s American operations; moving everything offshore to Japan. What I couldn’t tell her was what he’d told me—the US government wanted research they shouldn’t have. They wanted to weaponize our cure for Ebola.

Did Austin know who had leaked the photos? My chest ached at the thought. He wasn’t totally oblivious—in fact, he was highly plugged in. Weren’t men like Austin always checking the news and the stocks and whatever? He must have seen the article by now—from there it wouldn’t take an
