6 p.m.

I hear the speedboat outside and the voices of friends calling, Vanessa, hurry.  But Marianne isn’t leaving.  She sends me to my room as if I’m a little girl.  And when she does this, it’s as if all those mean girls from high school are here.  They say, You’re jealous of Marianne.

I almost forget about Marianne’s date.  I’ve heard her talk about him before (how she was looking forward to going out); and then it’s as if I disappear from the world and there’s a hole in my memory about what happens after she tells him I’ve ruined their plans.  (I half expect to see Beast laughing along with Phil and all our friends as if we played a prank).  But there’s only an empty room, and the reader that takes me anyplace else.
