The Wrong Alpha - Beth Jackson

    CHAPTER 34 - Knox

What a fucking day! My Beta Jake, my Gamma Dan and two of our warriors Gabriel and Manuel had decided a drink was needed. We headed to our usual haunt The Black Star club not far from our offices, it was a bar/club that while it was in the human area was a regular place many werewolves would call in for drinks. And with it being within close proximity to our main offices it was a regular call off point for us when we had a shitty day, or just when we wanted a drink to kick back with.

Holla at ya boys! The doorman said as we approached.

The five of us looked at each other and rolled our eyes at the fool trying to act like he was a friend like he did every time we came to the bar but I replied hey Steve. It didn’t hurt to show some manners, meant we got in to club quickly and with no issues when it was busy, even when there was a queue.

The bar was mildly busy tonight which was bearable. But we went straight to our usual booth, Gabe and Manuel went to sort the drinks as the rest of us sat talking about the shit show our day had become. A business deal taking a lot more time and effort than it should have.

As we sat talking a girl with garish coloured hair and a figure hugging bright red dress walked past winking at Dan as she did, I couldn’t help but roll my eyes at Dan who was pretty much drooling on the floor at the girl as she strutted her way to the tables near the stage.

I noticed another girl with her, walking not quite so confidently, in a small black dress, her long blond hair hanging down her back. It made me smile to myself how the two couldn’t be further from being alike yet from how they interacted with one another they seemed to be close friends. I thought of what my Mum used to say that it’s weird how fate brings two opposites together as friends maybe to bring one what the other needs to complete them as a person in support and friendship or some shit like that she had told me growing up.

I watched them giggle together at their seats. The lights from the stage lighting up the blond girls features, her eyes were a beautiful aqua blue, like a swimming pool you could dive into, and they crinkled at the edges as she smiled what looked like a genuine smile and giggled at her friend, and her smile was beautiful- ok, not sure where that came from, don’t make a habit of staring at random girls in a bar. Certainly not in recent years.

Though as I turned to my left I could see Dan had barely taken his eyes from the girl in the red dress with the garish hair, ok maybe it wasn’t that garish, just the purple and blue shades were a bold choice, certainly bolder than her friends more natural honey toned blond.

Either way Dan seemed pretty hooked on her after the cheeky wink she gave him, probably after noticing he’d been staring as she’d walked by earlier, and the lust filled stares pointed in his direction coming from her way every now and again were far from discreet to be fair.

The beer was flowing too freely, though as werewolves we are able to drink an awful lot more and it not affect us the way it would an average human. So we would be good for some time yet, I’d say from the giggling getting louder from Dan’s not so secret admirer’s table they may well not be ok. I couldn’t help but find my eyes frequently drawn to the blond girl, though I’m sure it was just because of how the stage lights fell near her, and how piercing her eyes were. Plus Dan kept pointing out her friend, so was hard not to look in their direction. Two more girls, a tall brunette and a shorter red headed girl had arrived and joined them too, bringing with them a tray of shots which I can only imagine will mean trouble for them later.

Meanwhile the five of us were alternating between beer and whisky and complaining about work and pack issues. The bonus for us 5 was we were still single but we spoke about one of the pack warriors Ashton who had recently met his mate and was setting up their home.

When our pack members meet their mates they have the option to move from the pack house to a house out on pack lands to give them privacy as a couple and of course further down the line a place to bring up a family if that’s what they chose to do. Setting up a home was always a special thing for most, maybe more so for the she-wolf than the male, though I have to say I think a lot of males found it a big thing preparing their home for their mate, but that would be the wolf instinct in them wanting to be the provider and carer. Manuel works with Ashton a lot and is a good friend with him having gone to school together too, and as a friend had made the mistake of saying he would help decorate, he had been helping decorate their house over his last few weekends and made us laugh with tales of how fussy Ashton’s mate Lily had been.

As we joked about this I noted that there was some singing from the stage, and glanced up to see two of the girls from the group earlier up on stage singing along to karaoke. I rolled my eyes, as the brunette and red head from earlier sang…, or was it more wailed their way through RESPECT, an obvious karaoke song for a woman I guess. Bet they regret bringing those shots now I chuckle to myself….. bet the rest of the bar is regretting them drinking them too!

The girls sing their way through the girl anthem, one I knew well as was one my mum sang many a time round the house, and I could see their friends sat by the stage alternating between singing along and cheering for their friends…..yep they’re definitely drunk! But I guess they were enjoying themselves, ain’t that what they come out for? No crime in that I tell myself as the song ends, but quietly grateful that the song had indeed ended…..

Oh goddess! I’m going to need to pick Dan’s eyes up off the floor, the girl in the red dress with the purple hair is making her way to stage, her friends cheering her as she goes. She goes on to start to sing a sultry version of Black Velvet, but as she does she pulls her embarrassed blond friend to the stage to join in.

Blondie is looking down, with an awkward giggle shaking her head at her friend. I find my eyes are drawn to her, I can’t explain why, she seems a shy and quiet little thing, but yet I can’t take my eyes off her. Her friend gives her a nudge as the chorus kicks in and then she starts to sing along with her friend and her voice is beautiful. I see her look across to her friend who to be fair can sing pretty well too and she smiles a nervous smile, I can’t help but smile as she sings…

What you smiling at Knox? Dan asks

Shit, what was I smiling at?!

Just how much you’re drooling over little miss red dress up there mate I laugh, hoping to cover up my mistake.

Dan looked a bit taken back as Jake, Manuel and Gabe started to laugh, realising I’d got away with it I laughed too.

What I can’t look?! He growled quietly at us, clearly not impressed with the ribbing we were giving him for perving over the pretty young girl currently singing on stage.

That only made us laugh more as Gabe poured more whisky into our glasses, jeez Dan take a joke man he said as he passed him the glass.

My eyes were back to the stage as the girls finished their song and blondie looked genuinely proud of herself bless her, while lil miss red dress gave her a big hug as people clapped.

Two random guys came on stage now, near enough knocking the girls off the stage in their hurry to get to the microphones, to take a turn at the karaoke singing some rap song I can’t say I knew that well, they were clearly well gone after far to many drinks and were struggling to stick to the words which was highly amusing. But my eyes kept falling to the table by the stage…..

    CHAPTER 35 – Lilah

We sat in the bar chatting and cheering along to the karaoke, drinking probably more than we should, though being wolves we had some sway with that as we could drink more alcohol than most humans before it had any affect.

Indie was making eyes at some buff guy across the bar, he was with a group of business looking blokes, all looking pretty intimidating to be fair. She’d giggled telling me she’s caught him staring as she walked by so thought she’d be brave and wink at him, he had barely took his eyes off her since!

I could see her gazing at him every now and again, fluttering her eyelashes sexily at him while pouting or biting her lip, jeez what a hussy! I chucked to myself. I knew when I talked to her she was barely paying attention as her attention was more on him, I’m sure she only pulled me on to stage to sing karaoke with her to get his attention too, she knows I hate doing stuff like that, though after a few drinks it was slightly more bearable. I had noticed the dark gaze of this guy’s friend watching me a few times, did he know me from somewhere? His gaze was pretty intense at times, but any time I looked up he would look away, so maybe I was imaging it.

The karaoke was only on for a short time thank the goddess or no doubt Indie would have had me up there some more making a fool of myself. We sat chatting, drinking cocktails, laughing and joking, it felt so good to let my hair down and enjoy myself with Indie, we sang along to the real mix of songs the DJ was playing, we danced a little on the dance floor near our table, laughing so much at Indie attempting to be sexy no doubt for the benefit of the guy in the booth she’d been making eyes at.

I really didn’t get her she was gorgeous as she was she didn’t need to try so hard. As we danced I could see his friend watching us again, his gaze felt like it was burning through my soul, was I pissing him off? He was pretty hot though but I ain’t even going there, sworn of men, though his eyes were something else….. maybe he wasn’t looking at me, Lexi and Rae were near me, they were both gorgeous, both so confident and bubbly definitely more likely they would capture his attention as they looked gorgeous as they danced around.

Earth to Lilah… Indie interrupted my chain of thoughts you want to go to grab some food then come back?

Erm yeah sure that sounded like a plan as my snack this afternoon seemed a long time ago and some greasy takeaway food would go down so good right now,

We grabbed our bags and started making our way to the door, I couldn’t help but smile as I saw Indie flick her hair, stick her boobs out, and in that dress she should be careful as they were barely staying in the dress as it was without her pushing them up anymore! And now she walked her best strut as we headed past the booth the guy she’d been making eyes with all night was at.

I knew she was doing her best to act confident and sexy, when inside she’d be as nervous as me, not many people knew the insecure Indie like I did, we’d spoken at many a sleepover of her being unsure of herself and not being confident, yet to most outsiders she exudes confidence and happiness I guess it’s a front put on to protect herself from people knowing that inside she’s actually quite timid and anxious like me. I have to say I’m glad for the times she puts on such a good front though as I certainly can’t and I do come across as the timid and quite person I am.

Lex?! A voice shouted over the music as we walked past the booth.

    CHAPTER 36 – Knox

We sat talking about the boxing match we’d planned to go watch the following weekend in the local city that Manuel’s cousin was fighting in, Dan’s eyes flicking back and forth to the dance floor watching his new found crush dancing away with her friends.

They were laughing as they mimicked dance moves which made me smile to myself, making sure I didn’t get caught out again, knowing I was unlikely to get away with it again. Blondie joined in but seemed more awkward than her three friends, like she lacked confidence though I couldn’t figure out why, she was stunning, tall, with legs that seemed to go on forever, curves in all the right places and beautiful soft features on her face, framed by her waves of honey blond hair which in the glare of the dance floor lights made her look almost angelic. Seriously what in goddesses name is wrong with me?! Why can I not stop looking at her!

I focus on the guys again, as I see Dan’s jaw is almost on the floor as his girl is now doing a sexy dance alongside her red headed friend as they giggle. What a sap! I knock my whisky back before noticing the girls are walking toward our table, well maybe not toward it, more past as they look to be leaving.

Oh no way! Gabe mutters Lex?! he then shouts, though I’m unsure to who, it appears to be aimed at the girls, does he know one of them? I guess he could as his seat in the booth was facing the bar rather than the dance floor so he hadn’t really seen the girls tonight, until they came to walk by us, but still, why or how would he know them?

We all look at Gabe in shock then look to the girls, a look of recognition crosses the face of the petite red head as she squints her eyes adjusting from the bright lights of the dance floor to the slightly dimmer lights of the booths we were sat in.

Gabriel!! She squeals flinging herself across Manuel to give Gabe a hug.

We all look at one another puzzled, though I have to say Manuel’s face is a fucking picture, me, Jake and Dan having a clear view of the whole situation from the opposite side of the table. And all three of us absolutely loving it! Manuel clearly in shock having a petite red head, chucking herself across his knee to get to his friend, near elbowing him in the head in the process, her ass now near his face as she knelt on the leather chair of the booth as her legs weren’t quite long enough to help her reach Gabe. She had her arms flung tightly round Gabe’s neck in a tight embrace, clearly happy to see him. Did we miss something?

I looked to Gabe with my eyebrow raised in a million questions, he clearly saw the look on all our faces and realised the questions or thoughts processing in our brains, and he quickly pulled away looking a bit embarrassed.

Oh sorry guys, this is my cousin Lexi! he made a quick introduction Lex this is Knox, Jake, Dan and the guy who has your ass all up in his face is Manuel he chuckled as the look of realisation clearly hit the girl, and she quickly slid herself off the chair back to standing next to the booth with her friends who in fairness looked as puzzled as we had moments before.

Erm sorry Lexi said to Manuel her cheeks clearly tinted red from embarrassment, I didn’t think she awkwardly chewed the inside of her cheek before continuing I’ve not seen Gabe in ages and… she looked really uncomfortable and sighed.

I looked at Manuel who was clearly feeling bad for seeing Lexi feeling awkward and embarrassed the way she was. He was not good with women, goddess knows why, he went out with the guys often enough, but it came to talking to women and he just was no good, I kicked his foot under the table, he looked toward me and I nodded in the girls direction, silently conveying he should acknowledge her apology at least.

It seemed to work Oh no worries he muttered with a small smile.

Lexi smiled back, Like Gabe said I’m Lexi, his cousin, this is Rae she seemed to be talking to us all now and pointed to the tall brunette who gave us a small nod and smile this is Indie she said introducing the girl Dan had been making eyes at all night, and right now they were both smiling at each other like lovestruck fucking teenagers and last but not least we have Delilah, Lilah for short she said poking the blond girl in the ribs in a teasing way with a smile.

Hey Lilah smiled up at us all. Up close her eyes were even more beautiful, almost otherworldly, the blue was opalescent almost so they shimmered in the light like a gem, my eyes were drawn to them but I had to fight myself not to keep looking at her as I didn’t know the girl and didn’t want to make her uncomfortable.

Were you guys leaving? Gabe asked Or you want to join us? I looked at him and raised my eyebrow wondering where he suddenly felt confident enough to invite some random group of women to our table, but he gave an awkward smile to me, motioning with his head to Dan who still was looking all googly eyed at the girl I now know was called Indie, and then to his cousin and shrugged.

Oohhh thanks Gabe! Are you buying cuz? Lexi grinned at him, blowing him a kiss.

Oh great, already had a shitty day and now looks like we had company for the evening…..

    CHAPTER 37 – Indie

What were the chances Lexi knew these guys?! Well one of them at least, one was enough for us to get talking to them so I could talk to the hot guy who’d been checking me out all night. Okay I may have been checking him out too but who wouldn’t?!

That guy was hot! You wouldn’t want to meet him on a dark night if you’d pissed him off, me however…mmmmm I wouldn’t mind meeting him on a dark night….. I wouldn’t mind meeting him anywhere, his tall frame and muscly body could be enough to melt any she-wolfs heart! And those dark green eyes were to die for, I’d been staring into them most of the night so I’d know, but up close I could get lost in them.

My heart was racing when Lexi’s cousin invited us to join them, thinking I could actually get to talk to this guy! I may act confident and ballsy but in truth I’m not good at talking to people I don’t know and whilst I have been giving him the eye all night flirting with him I wouldn’t have the actual courage to go up and speak to him.

Though he hadn’t come to talk to me so maybe he wasn’t that interested…. Oh, maybe I’ve misread things….

We’ll shift round so you can fit in to sit down the guy Gabriel had introduced as Jake said. I looked up again at Dan, the guy I’d been flirting with all night, his eyes still on me, had I misread things?

I smiled shyly, he turned to his friend and said something then laughed as his friend replied. What had he said? Was he laughing at me? I wasn’t sure I wanted to stay now…

Lilah, you want to stay? Maybe we should go? I said to her.

Lilah tilted her head at me, he eyes filled with surprise but also concerned Really? You’ve been checking him out all night and he can’t take his eyes off you, you want to go now when you got chance to talk to him?! Don’t be crazy hun she smiled at me.

I don’t know if I misread things babe I said

She giggled at me, and said Definitely not misread, he’s been close to drooling Indie

You’re not thinking of leaving are you? A voice interrupted, Lilah and I both spun round to see the guy I think Gabe had said was called Knox or something like that.

Erm.. I stutter awkwardly not knowing what to say.

Had he heard out conversation?! As werewolves our hearing is crazy good so there was a slight chance he had despite all the noise from other people in here and the music currently playing, that could be embarrassing if he had.

I think Dan may be disappointed if you did leave…. he said with a smirk as he motioned for us to slide into the booth seats. The booth was now looking kinda cosy and more full than it had previously. Manuel at one edge with Rae and Lexi between him and Gabe, Dan sat next to Gabe sort of mid booth, looking up at me, a hopeful expression on his face, could I really leave now?

I guessed the plan was for me to go sit with him, Lilah next to
