Nobody can resist this, Mauria thought as she admired herself in the full length mirror. She traced her silhouette with her hands. Turned on by her own sex appeal, she appreciated her body and the way her black silk nightgown flowed over each of her perfect curves. Striking a sexy pose, she blew her reflection a kiss and sprayed on some perfume. Just too damn fine for your own good.

She wasn’t getting pretty for anyone but herself. In fact, she was going to spend the remainder of her evening curled up on her couch enjoying a good book. Wednesday nights were reserved for her ‘me’ time and she wouldn’t trade it for the world.

It took a lot of work to be Mauria. She considered herself to be quite the catch... pretty, educated, street smart, and she knew how to get what she wanted. Plus, when she wanted something bad enough, she wouldn’t quit until she got it.

Sashaying through her house into the living room, she poured herself a glass of merlot from the mini bar. After grabbing the book she started reading earlier that week, Euphoria, by her favorite author, Kesha Denice, she let out a sigh of relief as she plopped down on the couch.

Life just doesn’t get any better than this. She took a sip of wine and set the glass down on the coffee table, pulled her legs up and threw a light blanket across her feet. Just as she got settled and opened her book to read, she heard her cell phone notification say ‘message received.’ She smiled, having a good idea who the message was from.

you are like a drug. I’m fiending for you. i can’t get enough. I want to see you again.

She rolled her eyes and deleted Deric’s message. It wasn’t from who she thought it was from; who she wanted it to be from. Any other time she would have been more than happy to hear from Deric, but not right now. Now, there was someone else she’d rather entertain. What is it going to take to get this stalker to leave me alone for a while?

Opening her book she lost herself in the world of Teena Woods, a young lady who had everything going for herself until she was betrayed, then her life started going downhill really fast. Eventually, Teena finds herself in a situation where she may have killed someone. Mauria always enjoyed a good book that took her on a roller coaster of emotions and kept her eager to the turn the page and find out what happens next. As good as the book was though, she found it hard to focus on the story. She really wanted that text to be from the man she credited as one of her biggest challenges, Andre Adams, also known as Pastor Dre. She knew he would text her before the night was over, but she couldn’t wait. She checked her phone to see if maybe the text came while she was in the shower, and she just missed it. No such luck. Sure, she could text him, but that’s not how she operates.

Taking another sip of her wine, she forced herself to focus on her book. She was just a little over halfway finished since the last time she read, and had committed to finishing the book that night. Just as she was reading the last paragraph she heard her phone again ‘message received.’

Proud to be known as someone who finishes what she starts, she continued to read the last paragraph of the book before she set it down to check her message. It was from him.

I DON’T KNOW WHAT IT IS ABOUT YOU. YOU’VE GOT A HOLD ON ME LIKE NO ONE ELSE HAS EVER HAD. EVEN IF I WANTED TO LET GO, I WOULDN’T BE ABLE TO. IT’S LIKE VOODOO. I NEED YOU, AND I WANT YOU. I CAN’T WAIT TO SEE YOur beautiful face.

Mauria smiled, finally the relationship was headed where she wanted it to go. It wasn’t easy. It took months of planning, months of manipulation and months of putting up with foolishness she normally didn’t have time for. Now it was all panning out to be worth it.

Dre was the most gorgeous man she had ever seen.  He was tall, light skinned, with pretty hair, and a sexy smile. When she saw him, every nerve in her body tingled. Seeing him immediately put a damper on the relationship she was in with Deric. But she couldn’t get rid of Deric right away because she needed him as a pawn in the complicated game of chess she had to play to make Dre hers. She sent a text back to him,

WHEN IS THE NEXT TIME YOU CAN GET AWAY?

After a few minutes she received his reply,

I WANT TO SEE YOU TONIGHT BUT I RESPECT THAT THIS NIGHT IS RESERVED FOR YOURSELF. I CAN GET AWAY ON FRIDAY EVENING. I TOLD HER THAT I HAVE SEVERAL APPOINTMENTS THAT EVENING. I’LL SEE YOU THEN.

He was playing right into her hands. She texted back,

    I’LL SEE YOU THEN

She drank the rest of her wine, turned off the lights and turned on the television.   Several minutes later, she received another text message from Deric.

    WHY ARE YOU IGNORING ME?

Mauria let out a deep sigh. How can I get rid of him without getting rid of him? Even though she didn’t want to be bothered with him right now, she knew he would come in handy at some point. He gave her ego the boost it needed when she was feeling unwanted and insecure. Now that she had Dre, Deric was becoming more of a pest than anything else. They dated for a couple of years but the relationship ended about four months ago. When they met, Deric was already in a relationship with his daughter’s mother, Jayla, but that didn’t matter to Mauria. She was attracted to him, and she could tell that he was attracted to her, so she didn’t waste any time turning on the charm. When she found out Deric proposed to his girlfriend, Mauria was right there to offer all kinds of helpful suggestions; venues for the wedding, caterers, and venues for the reception. She would go on and on about how much she admired him for marrying the mother of his child and how she had such a deep appreciation for black love. She knew it would only be a matter of time before the stresses of planning a wedding would start to weigh on Deric and when it did, she was right there to lend an ear when he needed to vent. Mauria took advantage of the situation and manipulated him to the point where he was questioning if he was really ready to get married. The more they talked, the more she helped him realize that he was more curious about being in a relationship with her than he was confident about marrying the mother of his child. With only weeks before he was supposed to get married, he called his wedding off. There was plenty of drama after he called the wedding off because he and Mauria wasted no time moving in together. Once all the drama died down, Mauria found herself growing bored with the relationship. He never gave her any space, and always wanted to be a part of her every move. He started talking about marriage shortly after he was offered a job in another state. He wanted to get married before the move so that they could start their new life as husband and wife. She wasn’t 100% sure marriage was what she wanted, but she accepted his proposal, hoping that the marriage and a move would add some excitement to her life and their relationship.

As their wedding plans were underway, Deric set up a meeting with Pastor Dre so that he and Mauria could ask him to officiate their marriage.

Dre respectfully declined their offer because he was supposed to officiate Deric’s marriage to Jayla and felt it would be a conflict of interest. After setting her eyes on Dre, Mauria couldn’t agree more. It would definitely be a conflict of interest, because she was no longer interested in Deric. She noticed the wedding ring on Dre’s finger, but that didn’t matter. She wanted him and she always gets what she wants. The wedding ring made him that much more attractive as she always had a strong craving for forbidden fruit.

She read Deric’s text again and decided to respond.

HEY DERIC, SORRY I HAVEN’T BEEN RESPONDING TO YOU. I’VE BEEN BUSY. I’M SEEING SOMEONE. I HOPE ALL IS WELL FOR YOU AND YOU ARE ABLE TO MOVE ON AND FIND HAPPINESS THE WAY I HAVE.

She figured that was friendly enough so that when she needed him he’d be there and firm enough for him to back off for a while. She needed to focus fulltime on Dre right now so she didn’t have time to play with Deric. A few minutes later, she heard the ‘message received’ notification.

I HOPE HE TREATS YOU WELL. HE’LL NEVER LOVE YOU LIKE I DO. IF THINGS DON’T WORK OUT, YOU KNOW I’LL ALWAYS BE HERE FOR YOU.

She still had him right where she needed him. He was still easy to manipulate. Her whole reason for wanting to be in a relationship with him in the first place was to prove to herself that she could be more important to a man than the mother of his child and even at times more important than his child. It made her feel good. The fact that he wanted to marry her was just an added bonus. She smiled thinking about the look on Jayla’s face when Deric told her he and Mauria were getting married.

She referred to herself as the triple M, the master manipulator of men. She considered it a talent. As she climbed into bed she thought about how perfectly her plan to seduce Pastor Dre had worked. It was shortly after he had declined her and Deric’s request for him to officiate their marriage. She started attending the church where he preached. She would sneak into service and sit in the back to observe, making sure that he didn’t notice her. After church,
